“They're still missing,” it was a couple of days since the search of Serenity and the Frye homestead and Ben Amos had come to report on events in town. “The Sheriff’s had his men out searching the area where the mule crashed, but they’ve not even found a track.”
“And not likely to,” Zoë commented. “Jayne’s one of the best I’ve ever seen.”
“Brett’s getting frustrated,” Ben continued. “The ranch foreman’s come to town bringing more men with him. The men haven’t done anything yet, they’re just hanging around, but everyone is getting very nervous.”
“I’m thinking they should be.” said the Captain. “The bad guys will keep looking for Jack and the others, they’ll look weak otherwise. But I’m betting they’re going to start causing more trouble in town.”
“Why?” asked Tom.
“To appear strong, to be in charge again with folks scared of them,” Zoë answered.
“So what will they do?”
“Target someone whose friends with your family.”
“Ben,” Lily gazed with worried eyes at their friend.
“I don’t think so Lily,” he reassured her. “I’m the Alliance registered Inspector remember.”
“Not a good target,” Mal agreed. “They’d more likely choose someone weaker, someone the townsfolk want to protect. Someone, like I said, whose friends with either Kaylee or yourselves.”
*******************
Lou Anne Trent walked along the street thinkin’ about Kaylee. She hadn’t expected her friend to do anythin’ so darin’! To break her Daddy out of jail. Oh Lou Anne knew that the big scary guy had had a hand in it too. But Kaylee had been there, she’d driven the mule and everthin’, folks had seen her doin’ it.
Kaylee’s bravery and the Frye’s determination was makin’ Lou Anne wonder about standin’ up to the Sheriff her very own self. Like most everyone else round town, she’d been layin’ low, goin’ with the flow.
“Hey Miss Lou Anne,” one of the Willock ranch hands hailed her. “Ya gettin’ to high-toned to talk to yer old friends these days?”
“Ya weren’t ever my friend Dave; all ya ever did was tease me.” Lou Anne retorted as she glanced uneasily around. Not only was Dave standin’ right in front of her, but several more of the ranch hands were standin’ real close, makin’ a circle about her. Swallowin’ nervously she attempted, “I’m on my way to work here.”
“Are ya now?” he moved closer, loomin’ over her.
“Are these fellas bothering you miss?” a jovial voice interrupted.
Lou Anne looked up thankfully into a pair of steady blue eyes. “I was on my way to work,” she explained to him and the woman standin’ by silently.
“And these fellas stopped you?” Mal swept his eyes around the threatening group. “That don’t seem right. You can leave now fellas. I’ll take the lady to work.”
“Who might ya be then?” Dave questioned, not moving an inch.
“The name’s Malcolm Reynolds and this here’s Zoë and we don’t take kindly to women being harassed on the street.”
Zoë nodded and placed her hand conspicuously on her weapon causing the men around Lou Anne to glance uneasily at each other. Not one of them were armed and Zoë’s steady regard was making them nervous.
“I was just chattin’ to an old friend,” Dave placated, backin’ down. These two must be from the ship out at the Frye place. If they were anythin’ like the man who’d helped with the jail-break, he wasn’t gonna tackle them without weapons.
“He ain’t a friend of mine,” Lou Anne said indignantly.
“There you are then,” Mal sent a challengingly look around the group. “The lady don’t want your company, so you can leave now.”
*******************
“Come on Daddy,” Kaylee smiled encouragingly. “I know ya can do it.”
Jack leant precariously on a pair of homemade crutches and shuffled to the kitchen.
They’d been here a couple of days now and he was startin’ to feel a little better. At first he’d been too doped up to do more than register Kaylee’s presence. She was lookin’ after him devotedly; his little girl was a good nurse. She had just the right combination of cheer and firmness to deal with an invalid. It was mostly due to her coaxin’ that he was makin’ this attempt now.
“What are we eatin’?” he sniffed the air appreciatively, hungry for the first time in days.
“Rabbit stew,” Kaylee grinned at Jayne, who was watchin’ Jacks’ progress. “Jayne’s been trappin’ them.”
“I didn’t think there were any rabbits left round here,” Jack remarked.
“There’s plenty round the rocks,” Jayne handed them their plates. “Easiest bit of trappin’ I ever done.”
“He cooked them too,” Kaylee added. “and they sure smell nice.
Jack watched another silent exchange between his daughter and the mercenary. They seemed to communicate a lot that way.
He was aware that she and Jayne were sharin’ a bed, though neither of them had said anythin’ to him. The relationship puzzled him; it was unlike any he’d seen his girl involved in before.
‘Course it was awhile since Kaylee had left home and things changed. But he’d got the impression from her letters that she was interested in the doctor on board. To Jack it had sounded like another of Kaylee’s crushes on the shiny, different type. Jayne seemed the exact opposite.
Though they did appear to get on well, Jack wasn’t sure what if any feelings the big mercenary had for his daughter. His thoughts were interrupted when Kaylee broke the satisfied silence to talk to Jayne.
“Jayne, will ya teach me some fightin’ moves?”
“Why for?”
“Daddy’s already taught me some, ya know for when guys try stuff ya don’t want?”
“Fellas do that to ya often?” Jayne scowled wonderin’ why the hell she hadn’t told him sooner.
“Only sometimes, I’m pretty good at pickin’.” Kaylee patted his arm, “I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout that. It’s just I don’t wanna be the one always took hostage or tied up.”
That was what was worryin’ her, Mal’s stupid friend and gorramn Early. “None of that was yer fault.”
“I didn’t like bein’ tied up, specially when I didn’t even try to get away.” Kaylee missed the horrified expression on her father’s face. “Just wanna give myself more chance if it happens again.”
“I can teach ya. But I don’t know how much help it’ll be.”
“I can learn,” Kaylee stuck out her chin stubbornly.
“Ain’t sayin’ ya can’t, yer cleverer than me, but ya don’t like hurtin’ folks. Even ones that are mean to ya.”
*******************
“Let’s see ya get away from this one,” Jayne came up behind Kaylee and wrapped his arms around her securely.
Kaylee nodded and tried to ignore her hardenin’ nipples as Jayne pulled her back against.his body and stood unmoving. There was time for that later. Flingin’ her head back, she connected solidly with his chest.
“Ow!” Jayne’s arms loosened a little and Kaylee stamped hard on his foot, rammin’ her elbow into his belly at the same time.
His arms moved more and she wriggled out and started runnin’, not lookin’ back, and not stoppin’ till she got to the safety of the house. Kaylee burst through the door, “Daddy I did it! I hurt Jayne!”
“That’s good bao bei.” Jack said watching Jayne as he followed more slowly rubbin’ absently at his chest.
“Ya did good,” he agreed. Anyone shorter than he was would be hit either on the chin or in the head, givin’ her a chance to get away. “Remember ya got a good weapon already. Yer little and cute and folks don’t expect ya to be dangerous.”
*******************
“ya really think I did alright?” Kaylee squinted up at Jayne from the bath.
“Yeah,” he frowned and looked at her arms. “Did I put those bruises on ya?”
“Ya didn’t hurt me. I just bruise easily.”
Jayne climbed into the bath and settled behind her, legs on either side of her body. “Sure?”
“I’m sure.” Kaylee leaned back against his chest gratefully. “I’m so tired.”
“Ya worked hard today,” Jayne looked at his hand restin’ on her stomach. It nearly covered her from one side to the other.
Kaylee was strong for her size, all that physical work she did, but she was still only little. In spite of the tricks he was teachin’ her, any real fighter could still hurt her. Maybe when they got back he’d talk to ‘Nara. He bet they taught Companion’s lots of fancy martial arts for protection. That’d be ideal for Kaylee.
Kaylee felt good bout today. Jayne hadn’t gone easy on her either; he’d made her work real hard. For the first time since Early she had more confidence in herself. Thanks to Jayne.
It struck her though that they were gettin’ awful comfortable with each other, it sorta worried her. She was just about to voice her thoughts when Jayne’s hand cupped her breast and the other drifted between her legs. Kaylee’s thoughts were lost and she was floatin’ free, passion overtakin’ her.
Jayne watched Kaylee sleepin’ quietly on his shoulder. They were gettin’ too close. Jayne knew it. Look at now. By rights he should shake Kaylee awake and let her walk back to the house. But no here he was movin’ her round so he could pick her up. Gatherin’ her to his chest, he stood up and walked back to the house. They were gettin’ too close.
