River tracked him; appearing when he least expected it. She hovered while he exercised and stole his hoarded food.

She folded his shirts incorrectly, oiled his guns and sat with him whenever possible. Jayne didn’t react.

He listened for her; actin’ shocked when she appeared. He worked out harder when she was round and hid his food so she could find it.

He forgot his laundry, let her touch his guns and sit with him.

“It ain’t workin’,” Jayne complained.

“It will,” Inara smiled conspiratorially. “Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.”

Jayne growled; he was tired of patience.
