River tracked him; appearing when he least expected it. She hovered while he exercised and stole his hoarded food.

She folded his shirts incorrectly, oiled his guns and sat with him whenever possible. Jayne didn’t react.

He listened for her; actin’ shocked when she appeared. He worked out harder when she was round and hid his food so she could find it.

He forgot his laundry, let her touch his guns and sit with him.

“It ain’t workin’,” Jayne complained.

“It will,” Inara smiled conspiratorially. “Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.”

Jayne growled; he was tired of patience.

I think with his tracking and sniper experience, Jayne can probably be very patient - up to a point, then he'd get bored with it and snap. I think he's about reached that point here. Very nicely done.

yes, yes, more in this line. I like the idea of Jayne acting this way - he's always seemed someone for the blunt approach that I love the idea that he'd give River space to find her and him in this way.
