I can't believe this!!!!

Censorship and narrowmindness sucks :(

I firmly believe that people have a right to read or watch whatever they like. In my experience it's not children who look at these books and it's always adults who put the wrong conotations on them and others.

I am continually amazed that things like this continue to happen in a civilized and free society. Those board members should be ashamed. It is Kansas so I guess i shouldn't be too surprised

Good grief. Would the kids even be interested in those books if they hadn't been singled out? And how exactly is the library going to restrict access to them? The place I used to work kept newspapers behind the counter, but that was only because people used to steal them. Keeping "restricted" material behind the counter hides it from sight completely, because people simply lose sight of the fact that it exists.

1. 'Farenheit 451', Ray Bradbury.

2. Keeping children in the dark about sex = more unwanted pregnancies + more abortions.

If kids want to find sex they will do. Chances are there parents won't have locked down the net enough anyway and the net is rich in porn. To be honest, those books should go in their own section with contraception based books and other sex/relationship/consequence type ones. Not hidden away.

Kids get sexual young nowaday, it's a known facts. All the above stuff should be readily available. Okay, there has to be some censorship, but that should be by the parents. If they are old enough to be in the library without their parents, they're old enough to have questions and take responsibility. The more taboo something is, the more enticing.

That's horrifying. We all know it doesn't work. In fact, it tends to have the opposite effect. For example, when I was in high school I worked at a book store and we did this whole display featuring books that had been banned through time. I, of course, made it a point to read every one of them.

That's horrifying. Every time, it gets me.

ETA: And watch all possible banned films, too. *nods*

This just makes me want to read the books, and then use a whiffle bat to deal with the board.. I do appreciate something.. "THE SKY IS NOT FALLING, TOPEKA, KANSAS." Yeah, it is, or at least the IQ level.
