Dear River, Hows your arm Jayne says it was feeling all numb and you couldn’t fly? Is it better now? That musta been some gun for the bullet to come through the glass like that. I bet you were frightened I know I was when it happened to me. Ellen is busy filling the root cellar and Im helping her I want to make sure her and Mattie are ok when I leave. When were finished with the cellar I got a job in Gowan at the ship yards. The docking engines are all shot and they need me to fix them. Since I cant ride that far and cant drive the cart with my leg Ellens coming with me. Shes so excited but worried too. It’s the first time shes left Mattie since he was a boy and shes real anxious. Mattie just laughs and says hell be fine and for sure hes looking so healthy and ordinary that I think so too. Were gonna take Lion with us hes got real attached to me and truth be told Im just as attached to him. Hes so clever and cunning River I bet him and Fifi are gonna be great friends. I put on the lingerie you sent and modelled it for Ellen. The materials so soft and pretty Ive never owned anything so fine. The drawings you sent are fine too it was like being back home. It must have been hard to get everyone to cooperate I can hear Jayne complaining now. Simon was mighty swai in his drawing but hes looking a mite sick still dont you think? Is he ok? Cept for my leg and its feeling better at last everyone here is well. Look after yourself and everyone girl. Love Kaylee

My arm and my motor functions are improving exponentially. Today I can write to you and tomorrow, thank Buddha, can go back to piloting the ship.
I’m thankful; for I’ve missed it so much. I now have some notion of how you feel being away from your girl. But it won’t be long now Kaylee. We’re on the home stretch as the Captain calls it. I can’t wait to see you, Ellen and Mattie and to see how Lion behaves.
I never saw him. Jayne told no-one of what he planned. What does the Lion cat look like? Do you have a capture? I’m sure he and Fifi will get on well and I informed the Captain of this. He grumbled mightily about the prospect of another animal on board, but Inara has persuaded him to look favourably on Lion.
It’s lovely Kaylee to see how close they have become; the Captain and former Companion. They still dance; but this dance has a different ending and they are happy. I hope I have that some day.
Simon was looking unwell, but the further we move away from the mines, the better he becomes. I was worried about him, particularly since he seemed concerned too and would say nothing to me. His concern increased of course when I got shot and he’s back to coddling me again. I’ll be happy when you come back my friend. My dear boob speaks more easily then and is less likely to smother me.
Did you and Ellen enjoy your trip? I know Mattie survived because he wrote to me. Did you know that Kaylee? Since you sent his gift and I replied, we’ve kept up a correspondence. I’m enjoying it very much. My first notes from a member of the opposite sex; it is quite exhilarating!
The job Inara organised went smoothly and we are already embarked on another. We’re smuggling liquor this time and it’s a subject of much arguing between the Captain and Jayne. I sometimes think those two will be arguing in their graves. Perhaps we should bury them on separate moons?
I’m only joking Kaylee. I know that their many disagreements are often a way for them to dispel tension or strangely enough, express some form of camaraderie. I would not have them change. Everyone is well and there is much wedding planning in the air. I am looking after all, though sometimes my charges are difficult.

Dear Jayne, You done good cleaning the thrusters and all. I told you youd be a good assistant didnt I? Assistants gotta take orders all the time you know though I aint really the ordering kind. I think coaxing and working like a hoopball team works just as well what do you think? Your Ma and me are back from Gowan we had a wonderful time. When I werent working we went out on the town two girls together. I earned good coin doing that job Ive actually got savings it feels great. Ellen sold all her pretties at the market so shes got savings too its good to see. Lion came with us and sat in the cart as quiet as you please. Hes the best company Jayne and gets on well with your home animals. Im sure hell do fine with Fifi and wont be no trouble. Therell be no reason for Captain to squawk. You didn’t go short to buy him did you? I know he aint no ordinary cat. I gotta talk to you bout something get it off my chest. Please dont say anything bout what Im telling you. Its just Inaras so happy I dont want to disturb that and River shell be upset. Simons thinking bout leaving Serenity thats all it is just thinking. But it worries me. He talks about River going too you know she cant do that the ships her life. Kaylee, The ships fine even with Mal doing some of the flying. I wont say nothing but talk to Ma shes already asking me stuff and knows bout these things. That’s good bout the orders cause I aint good at taking them coaxing might work if I get some sorta incentive. Long as there aint too many lists maybe Ill stick it out. We got us a hold full of liquor this run but I aint even had a taste. You ever know me to go short girl? The cat was part payment for a job I did. Jayne
Dear River, I do miss Serenity and all of you theres something about being in the Black. I love it here with Ellen and Mattie and like the life planetside for awhile. But Im always going to be wanting to be moving around and flying I know that now. You and me are alike there I think. Lion is a beautiful golden brown colour with yellow eyes and the softest fur. Hes so cunning when he plays with the ball I bought and cuddles up with me when I sleep. I took some captures of him and Ellen took some of me in the lingerie so Ill send them to you. Ellens bought some paint with her earnings and were painting the house inside and out. She does all the climbing and such and I do all the low bits. We have lots of fun working together. Lion tried to eat the paint and him and one of the other cats got dripped on. So he had his first bath you should have heard the noise River. Mattie came running in he didnt know what it was. Im glad you two are writing youll know him pretty well by the time you get here. Hes a real hard worker and a bit of a tease like Jayne. You made me laugh talking about the Captain and Jayne like that I don’t know why they cant say what they feel now and then. At least the Captains relaxed enough now to talk to Nara. While we were at Gowan I used some of my coin to buy a new dress for the wedding. It’s a real pretty colour bronze the shop lady called it. Theres ribbons to go with it and even shoes I never had shoes that matched my clothes. I spose you think thats strange. Hows your arm now? Are you flying again? Give Zoë Nara and Simon a hug from me and kiss Jayne and the Captain on the cheek. Thatll shock them properly. Im sure youre looking after all our friends well dont forget to look after yourself. Dear Kaylee,
We have been assaulted, invaded, boarded. Our peace has been disturbed by pirates, our girl was hurt. I both saw and felt them coming Kaylee but was unable to avoid their ship. My skills must be deficient, I am ashamed.
The pirates were after our cargo, but they didn’t get it; we prevailed. We’re not without injury though; both the Captain and Jayne got shot.
Unusually it was Jayne who was the most injured and it worried us. Except for small nicks and scratches he’s rarely hurt seriously. This time the shot was nearly fatal and he was unconscious for two days. We were all glad when he woke and began complaining of the pain, it seemed much more Jayne like.
He is recovering, but is still not allowed to lift weights or do anything strenuous, so the Captain has hired another mechanic for a spell. You see how I use the vernacular? I love to sound more like my friends.
Your gown sounds beautiful; I can’t wait to see it. Our next job is to smuggle more dresses for Inara’s friend and we are to choose our own from the collection. I can’t wait Kaylee. It will be the first ‘party’ dress I’ve chosen for myself, I hope to keep it forever.
My arm is better and I’m flying again, I do love it and agree with you. Although I could survive, and even enjoy life on a planet or moon for awhile; I’ll always be called back to the Black. We are two of a kind in this respect.
Mattie and I have got closer as a result of our letters and you’re right he is a tease!
When I mentioned the dark corners to him he was very interested and said he may have to get pointers from his brother.
The lion is aware of the letter exchange; of course he is familiar with his brothers’ writing, and is disturbed by it I think. He’s said nothing though, for which I am grateful. It wouldn’t do for either the Captain or Simon to be upset by this. Though Kaylee don’t you think that as I’m grown I should be able to make mistakes and decisions as I will?
Simon’s health is improving, but his mood is not. I wish I could hear what is the matter, but I’m trying not to do that. Has he said anything to you my friend? I do worry about him.
The others are all well. Zoë, Inara and I have been reading about the many different wedding traditions which abound. The ones I chose were vetoed immediately. Apparently the Captain would call off the wedding. He’s such a boob.
The Lion cat is beautiful isn’t he? He reminds me of the ships’ lion a little, don’t you think? I enjoyed the other captures too, the lingerie suits you. I chose well I think.
I must go Kaylee. It’s my turn to entertain Jayne and keep him from boredom. It is a full time occupation. Look after yourself my friend and kiss Ellen and Mattie for me. I did the same to the Captain and the Lion, the result was all you could wish.

It hurts and I got folks to care for me here please be nice to Simon. It aint nobodies fault we just think different is all and are stubborn. I fixed the hothouse and he ordered some seeds so now shes growing flowers for the wedding. I help her with them when Im not at the mines. They asked me to come back and do some more fixing its nice to be wanted but I cant wait to see you all and Serenity. Im moving better and my leg dont ache as much now either. Ill be fine to come back to my girl. Im glad you got Lion as a part payment I wouldnt be without him hes such a comfort lately. Ellen and me have finished the painting your house looks like new. Yeah I knew the girl and Mattie were writing aint my business. If Ma says its awright then it is. That whiskey you sent tasted real fine I guess you coaxed me good.
