Dear Ellen,
I make meditating part of my daily ritual and I do think its working. Fifi sits beside me when I’m doing my exercises. I wonder if dogs meditate too? I think it possible. The Captain says she’s probably just planning what mischief she intends for the day. But he’s just grumpy because she chewed his suspenders.
We’ve reached Persephone and have, after a several restless days, obtained a job. My piloting skills are of the upmost importance for this job. It makes me feel quite proud Ellen.
Zoë has given me a precious possession; the wings Wash earned at flight school. She says I’ve earned them ten times over and that he would be honoured if I wore them. So I shall. They give me confidence in my abilities and make it easier to fly on our current mission. Isn’t that strange? They are inanimate objects – how can they instil confidence?
I’ve discussed your plans for Kaylee’s birthday and everyone agrees to the celebration. I can’t believe we didn’t celebrate it last year. Kaylee is so good about remembering all our special occasions, even the little ones. I feel guilty that I’ve done nothing for her.
Since you’ve ordered me to, I will definitely dance every dance with Mattie. That is if he asks me. Kaylee is apparently organising dark corners for kissing. I intend to practice that with your boy too and am quite giddy with anticipation. I may have to leave Fifi in the house with your cats. I’m sure she will either try to interrupt, or give away our position if she attends the dance.
Simon has been busy inventorying the infirmary. The Captain assures him that part of the proceeds from this current mission will go towards restocking it. I wish he would worry about Kaylee and her feelings as much as he does about his work Ellen. But I’m afraid he doesn’t. Or perhaps he does and I just misunderstand. He certainly doesn’t behave to her like Wash did to Zoë or Inara does to the Captain. They are the only guides to behaviour I know, my parents being inadequate in this regard, as many others.
I hope you, Mattie and Kaylee are well? I’m sending some more drawings with this letter and hope you enjoy them.
Love River
Dear River, Im pleased to hear bout the dancing and dark corners. I lurked in plenty when I was a girl and had fun. Kaylee finished her mine job and is now working at Booral shes improving everyday. Simon does love our girl its like you said he aint good at relationships. The idea of the wings gives you confidence girl they belonged to a brave man and good pilot remember. The drawings are beautiful my boy and his guns is my favourite. Love Ellen
Dear Ellen,
I knew you would like that sketch the best! It was the hardest to obtain of them all. The lion was not co-operative in any way. He refused to pose as I wanted; and only after much persuasion agreed to me drawing him while he cleaned his guns. Even the Captain was more agreeable.
Dark corners Ellen? What fun you must have had when you were a girl. I love to listen to Kaylee’s stories of her childhood, they seem so far removed from mine. Perhaps you can tell me some of your stories some day? I’m sure they would be fascinating.
We have finished the job on Persephone and are now doing a similar one at the next moon over. The job requires much concentration on my part Ellen and is very stressful. It has been made more so by my worry over Simon.
The dust from the mines has affected his lungs and he is coughing again. His duties were few on the Persephone job and it’s likely to be the same for this one. Since none of us wish him to be ill again we have persuaded him to stay in a nearby town.
Persuaded is the kind word Ellen. My stubborn brother refused to leave me and argued mightily against the idea. The Captain became exasperated and ordered him off the boat. No-one is currently happy.
Bud, the mechanic, has left also. He didn’t care for the amount of work our last job caused for him; he complained constantly. I don’t know why Ellen. It wasn’t he who did most of the cleaning, it was the lion.
We have sent Kaylee’s gifts to you and I haven’t breathed a word to her. I hope she has a wonderful celebration and likes the present I bought her. I chose it while on one of my forays into the city at Persephone; it is the first gift I’ve ever purchased on my own.
The job here continues for another two weeks, so I have arranged an off day for the date of Kaylee’s party. We are all looking forward to seeing her and you, even if it is only over a wave.
Love River
Dear River,I know how difficult that boy of mine can be you must have been very patient. Ill be happy to tell you some stories I was very wild though child and not a good example. Kaylee has finished her work at Booral and is resting Im a mite worried at how tired she gets. Shes eating well and exercising it concerns her I know. Don’t worry about your brother hes just gotta get used to you being grown up. All brothers are the same you know. Your gifts have arrived and the partys all set. Look after yourself. Love Ellen
Dear Ellen,
The party was wonderful, we all had a good time and I think you did too? Kaylee looks well and so happy with all her presents. It made me miss her even more. Isn’t that silly? It was nice to see all the other people there. I’m sure Kaylee has made herself liked by all.
The Captain was none too happy with Jayne and his gift. But Inara and I have talked him around. If I can have Fifi, I see no reason why Kaylee can’t have a kitten to love.
The Captain says they will fight and a ship is no place for a kitten. I don’t think they will fight. Fifi is a lover not a fighter and the kitten will be used to dogs after living at your house. Also I think the kitten will adapt to shipboard life just as Fifi has. The Captain has been known to say she’s a good watch dog and even pat her after all. I reminded him of this and he rolled his eyes and muttered about women’s wiles, but has said no more.
I asked Simon about the tiredness and he said that it was natural for Kaylee to be tired at this stage. He also said that your reports of her progress are right on target, and that she looked very well at the party. I wish I could say the same for him Ellen.
My brother looks almost old, and very unwell. I hope Kaylee didn’t notice, she’ll be so worried about him. His health has improved though, the coughing has stopped and he is less tired. Zoë says once we’re feeding him again, he’ll look better and I’m holding to that hope.
Our work here is nearly finished and the Captain has another job lined up on Greenleaf. It is supposed to be simple and no trouble. I’m looking forward to the rest and the chance to read some of the books I’ve been collecting.
I think you a wonderful example my friend. As I told you, I was wild too. If I turn out to be half the woman you are, I’ll be happy.
Love River
Dear River, Youre already a kind lovely woman and beautiful too Mattie couldn’t take his eyes of you. Thanks for talking to Simon. I can let Kaylee go work in Gowan with a quiet mind. Im going too though just in case and am mighty nervous about it. Zoës right feed Simon well and youll see an improvement. It was a wonderful party I admired the lingerie and Kaylee modelled it for me. The materials so soft Ive never felt the like. The kitten is beautiful and already devoted to our girl my boy chose well. I hope youre well River and enjoying your books. Love Ellen
