Marcus frowned in abstraction at the computer screen and wished he’d been able to force more out of the girl. Unfortunately in the middle of their encounter his beeper had gone off and he’d had to leave without getting what he wanted.
On subsequent visits he was met with the bland intelligence that Thace was absent. Judging from her assistant’s expression; it was obvious she was avoiding him
Of course he could just kick down her door and have his way with her and he’d considered it. But unless he was required to do so, Marcus preferred his sexual partners to enjoy the act; and him. If he had to work a little to persuade them to it, that was even better. Unfortunately that rarely happened. His looks, size and sophistication usually attracted women like flies. Thace’s very intransigence had him interested in spite of himself, and he started to look for ways to get to her.
Despite an intense search through company files and on the Internet, he’d found little information about Thace. Except for general business transactions like owning her book shop and paying taxes, there was very little trace of the girl anywhere. The only other place he’d found any mention of her were a series of police reports from first Houston and now here.
He shook his head to clear it. He was heavily involved right now in keeping the Partner’s plans on an even keel and didn’t have time to chase after a clever enigma who had made it clear she wasn’t at all interested in him.
Women normally clamoured for his attention. It was the novelty of her unwillingness that had him interested Marcus thought. He knew, from experience; that once he won their tussle and got between Thace’s legs, this annoying abstraction would be over.
Marcus pushed back his chair and strode out of the office. If he couldn’t find any information on her here, he’d go to the source.
***************
“You said Thace was visiting here,” Marcus reminded the IT manager, an edge of anger in his voice.
“She’s friends with Rick and…”
“Rick? Which one’s Rick?” Marcus swung round to look at the technicians in the next room.
“Third right,” the manager (what was his name?) indicated a soon-to-be-dead geek type person dressed in black. “He and Thace play in the same RPG together. Role-playing game,” he explained seeing Marcus’ incomprehension.
“Role-playing?” Marcus didn’t understand today’s sexual mores at all. Why did anyone, least of all Thace, have to resort to playing a role to enjoy sex?
“Not that sort of role-playing,” the manager correctly interpreted Marcus’ cold expression. “It’s a game you can play on the computer; millions play them all the time.”
The girl really wasn’t his type Marcus thought. The sooner he got her out of his head the better. “You were saying earlier,” he continued his interrogation. “That Thace was friends with Rick and…?”
“The boss,” the manager replied. “Angel.”
Now Marcus was definitely intrigued. Ignoring the manager he set off in the direction of the vampire’s office. During his observations of the self-righteous annoying one, he’d seen little to indicate that Angel had any friendships outside of his inner circle. How and where had he met Thace and why had he offered a job?
Pondering possible explanations as he crossed the foyer, Marcus spied a familiar flash of pink.
Heading toward the splash of colour Marcus was more than a little disconcerted to see Thace talking to Angel. Judging from the gestures and the way the vampire was acting, and just as the manager had indicated, it wasn’t a business conversation either.
“All I’m saying…” Angel trailed off as the Liaison loomed up beside him. “What do you want Hamilton?”
“From you; nothing, I’d like to speak to Miss Papagadous when she’s ready.” Marcus answered politely.
“I really don’t have anything to say to you Mr Hamilton.”
“It’ll only take a moment,” Marcus smiled at her persuasively. “I’ll wait over here till you’re done.”
“I don’t think he’s going to be fobbed off this time,” Thace remarked ruefully. “He’s looking a bit like Immovable Man to me.”
“Does he know who you are?” Angel asked quietly, watching him walk away. “More to the point do you know what he is?”
“Yes I know what he is,” Thace looked wistfully at Big Sexy’s back. She had a thing for big men and he was all that and more. “No-one but you and Tim know who I am and that’s how it’s going to stay.”
*************
She was deliberately making him wait, Marcus thought watching Thace continue her conversation. She seemed to have no sense of self-preservation whatsoever. Almost everyone he came into contact with jumped to do his bidding; she was making him wait while she talked to a vampire.
Finally just before his patience gave out, she finished talking and came over to where he was standing and grinned at him cheekily. “Is there a problem with your computer Mr Hamilton?”
“No,” he growled. “That isn’t what I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Well that’s all I’m prepared to talk to you about.” Thace turned and started walking toward the door.
“I’ll walk you out.”
“I’m a big girl now Mr Hamilton,” Thace reminded him. “And I know where the exit is.”
“You know what I want too,” Marcus said with his most seductive smile. “And if I’m not mistaken you want it too.”
“My hair doesn’t match your suit,” she remarked inconsequentially.
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“Everything,” Thace stepped out the doorway and hoped he wouldn’t follow. “Shit,” she turned quickly back inside and slammed into the brick wall he called a chest again. “Sorry.”
Marcus reached out and grasped her elbow to steady her. “Something wrong?”
“No, I just had a sudden yen to leave through the car park.”
“Hmmm,” he grasped her elbow harder. “Are you avoiding someone else as well as me?”
Thace wriggled impatiently and glared at him. “That’s none of…”
“Mr Hamilton, Mr Hamilton!” Harmony came barrelling across the floor, “The Ragoth Demons are here and…”
“Wait,” he snapped at her and turned back to his annoying companion.
“Don’t let me stop you,” Thace wrenched herself out of his grasp and started walking away. “Ragoth demons wait for no man.”
“She’s right,” Harmony nodded. “They’re tearing up the reception room and soon they’ll start foaming at the mouth again.”
Marcus gave her an exasperated glance and watched Thace moving purposefully toward the car park exit. Ignoring Harmony’s bleatings he went out the front door and looked around the plaza. Something or someone out here had disturbed Thace’s casual mood very effectively and after he dealt with the inopportune demons, he intended to find out what it was.
***************
“Did you get it?” Tim looked up as his boss flew through the door.
Thace nodded and handed over a vial of liquid. “Next time I do it myself though. Angel’s getting weirder, I’m sure he’s going to do something stupid again.”
“What took so long? I was expecting you back ages ago,” Tim complained. “You know I promised to do this by this afternoon.”
“There was a Triumvirate guard waiting outside and Marcus Hamilton inside. I had a fun afternoon.”
“Did the guard know you were in there?”
“I don’t think so,” Thace shrugged. “Wolfram and Hart is just such a logical place to start looking for me.”
“What are you going to do if they ever find you?” Tim looked at her in concern.
“Scream and run away I guess.”
“If you let Hamilton get near you, he’d protect you. I’m sure he’s the Dark Knight of the prophecy.”
“Tim, I’m not sure I’m the one mentioned in the prophecy, or that it’s even true.” Thace was so tired of this discussion. “I’m not going to have sex with His Evilness, just on the off chance and that’s final.”
