Dear Ellen, Im posting this soon as were planetside I know you were probably worried we were gone a mite longer than we said. Jaynes fine he worked real hard he did most of the welding and such since I was laid up. Zoë welds too and she helped when she could. We were all busy there was so much to salvage Ive never seen the like. I think were working better together now its taken awhile to get used to the others not being there. Me and Wash always worked on the wiring and engine stuff together and I still miss him but Rivers a marvel with the wiring and electrics shes a big help there. She aint so good with engines strangely enough though I guess even geniuses cant be good at everything look at Simon. The Shepherd used to help me with the engine and with a lot of the heavy work so were working around him too. Jaynes pretty good around the engine he don’t understand the workings at all but hes great at seeing what should go together. Long as I don’t ask him too often to fiddle with the little things like wiring and such hes a good mechanics assistant. Hes had to be the last month with me not able to get around as much he says Im just as cheerful as ever though and it grates on a man the grump. Captain and Jayne do a lot of the lifting and carrying now and Zoë does the paperwork and organising. Shes better than the Captain at it really more focused or something. I think Nara was feeling left out since she gave up Companioning and there aint much mediating to be done in the black. But shes got a new niche too she helps Simon in the infirmary and does a lot of the cooking. Me and her have managed to make your fine food last all this time we only used the last can yesterday. I cant tell you how much we loved that food Ellen my favourite was the strawberry jam I scrapped the jar clean. The Captain laughed and laughed and said maybe I better ask you for more jars next time. If I had more jars I could do something inappropriate with Simon and the jam I think though maybe now Ive said that you wont make any? This has been an awful long letter but I wanted to tell you what weve been up to cause I bet Jayne wont whatd he say were back Ma or something? Love Kaylee
Dear Kaylee, Youre a good girl always looking out for others thank you for telling me how Jayne does I do like to hear your tales. Ill make you more jam and don’t mind what you do with it though you puzzled Mattie mightily with your remark hes been too often at home that boy. Your crew sounds like theyre doing well Im glad Jaynes being such a good assistant Love Ellen
Dear Ellen, Did you like your wrap? River and me helped Jayne choose it he was so long in that shop I thought he was never gonna decide. I look forward to the jam though maybe Ill be doing more eating of it than using it on Simon. Do you know what him and the Captain did? Did Jayne tell you? Im so angry with them both Im gonna tell you what happened I need to get it off my chest. First it was great we all went wandering round the town even me. I had plenty of time to practise with my crutches while we were salvaging and was looking forward to going out that night with Simon. Zoë stayed behind it’s so hard to get her to go out and Jayne went off somewhere but the rest of us went out together. Dinner went good Simon relaxed some and we cuddled in public I loved that Ellen the man turns my bones to jelly. The place we ate had dancing and one of the local fellas asked River to dance she was so happy it was all so innocent and shiny. Then Simon got on his high ropes and said she couldn’t the fella was so startled he was a just ordinary boy didn’t know what to make of it. The Captain came over then and was all hasty Nara made him leave before he said anything too bad and we went too. River didn’t want to but Simon wouldn’t listen and the guy left it was too confusing for him she was so disappointed. Back at Serenity the Captain and Simon started lecturing her bout men and such Nara and I would never let anything happen to her and know more about men anyhow. River was real upset by this time with folks yelling and all so she ran away and hid. Simon and me still aint speaking he didnt like some of the things I said and I for sure didn’t like what he said and did Im so confused. Sorry for being such a baby I havent even asked after you and Mattie. Love Kaylee
Kaylee, girl you aint being a baby good on you for sticking up for River I think you all get too mixed up sometimes. It comes from being together so much I guess. I know you and Simon both probably said hurtful things and I understand you being angry specially after such a nice start. Take a deep breath and go slow things will work out. Mattie had a cold but is better him and me went on a holiday I loved my wrap Love Ellen
Dear Ellen, I been slow answering you this time my leg has been paining me and I was laid up again. Thanks for the necklace its beautiful did you know the kind of knots you used are special Nara says its almost a lost art. The others liked their gifts too River dressed Fifi in her coat straight away she looks so pretty. Jayne laughed at her but he likes her really, the dog I mean, but hes treating River better these days too. Did you know it was him found her when she hid? Poor River shes been feeling so good bout being able to help out be part of the crew then Simon and the Captain treated her like a little girl again it took her a bit to bounce back. Captain apologised and hugged her that made things better Simon hasn’t said much just ignored everything. I think hes not sure what to say so hes being quiet that way he cant offend any of us. Hes been good looking after me with my leg hurting so much again and were back together. We did another job and got paid really good I cried when everybody gave their coin to help me. My legs not healed properly you see and as well got all infected twice now. Simons gonna have to break the bones again he says or I might not have a leg. I cant have that happening I wont be able to work on my girl if it does so Im gonna do it though its scary Love Kaylee
Dear Kaylee, My Ma taught me those knots fancy them being special. Girl I already told Mal you can stay here while you heal. Im gonna make sure you stay still and let that leg heal so I got some stuff for you to fix while youre lying around. Dont be scared child this operation will mean you can stay with Serenity and your family Love Ellen
