Kaylee shivered against Jayne’s chest and listened to his heart beatin’ strongly under her ear. His presence blocked for the moment her humiliation and fear and the shouts and catcalls she could still hear.

“Kaylee”, his voice seemed to come from far away. “I gotta check your burns.”

She knew he had to. Workin’ with engines like she did, she was constantly sufferin’ small burns and was aware they needed immediate treatment. But she was nervous
‘bout Jayne or anyone lookin’ at these ones, touchin’ her.

“Kaylee, I gotta…” Jayne gently moved Kaylee around so she couldn’t see the Sheriff’s bullet ridden body and waited for her answer.

“Alright,” Kaylee answered, lookin’ up into his concerned eyes.

Keepin’ hold of her elbow, Jayne stepped back and looked more carefully at the burns and other injuries. The girl’s eyes were all clouded and confused and the knot on her head was still bleedin’. Her wrists were a mess from the rope that had bit into them and there were finger marks round her throat and bruises and cuts all over her pretty skin.

Lookin’ closer at the burns, Jayne bit his lip in an effort to control his temper. Over the years he’d had to get tough with a few fellas, he’d broken bones, punched heads and been generally intimidating. But he’d never burnt no-one; especially not girls who never hurt anyone in their lives. The burns were bad ones too, they were gonna scar.

“I’m gonna have to pour some water on these,” he warned. “It’ll hurt.”

She nodded and nearly jumped outta her skin when the other man came up beside them. “I can hold her if ya want?”

“Don’t think that’s a good idea,” Jayne answered for her. The girl was bound to be nervous of menfolk right now. He was amazed she were even lettin’ him this close. “He helped ya Kaylee remember?”

Brown eyes wide with fear Kaylee glanced sideways at the other man. “No touchin’,” she shook her head.

“He won’t touch ya,” Jayne assured her. “It’s just me girl. I’m gonna pour the water now, then we can get ya back to yer Daddy, alright?”

***************

“We’re nearly there girl. Jack will be powerful glad to see ya.” Jayne remarked to the head nestled on his shoulder.

He was gettin’ more and more worried ‘bout her. She’d nearly fainted when the water touched her burns and when he’d asked if she were hurt anywhere, Kaylee shuddered and her hands had drifted to her nethers protectively.

“Did they rape ya girl?” Jayne tried desperately to keep the furious anger out of his voice. He didn’t want her thinkin’ he was angry at her.

“No, they would’ve though. Brett said.” Kaylee rasped out. “But they touched me...”

Her voice broke and she hadn’t spoken a word since and he weren’t used to that. Kaylee always talked. Her cheerful chatter was, after he got over the shock of it, what first drew him to her.

She talked when the situation was fraught, when jobs went bad, when folks needed comfort, all the time. Even way back, when that ruttin’ Fed shot her she’d talked till the Doc doped her up. Her silence now was tellin’ him how hurt and shocked the girl really was and it was mighty unsettling.

“Don’t want Daddy to see; don’t want him to know what happened.” Her desperate whisper startled him. “Don’t want anyone knowin’.”

“The doc needs to look at ya,” Jayne protested. He’d been plannin’ on callin’ down to the farm soon as they got back. “To make sure ya ain’t hurt in yer nethers. He knows how to talk ‘bout what happened to ya too.”

Kaylee shook her head in agitation her eyes full of tears. “No. Please Jayne.”

“Inara?” Jayne suggested hopefully. The Companion would know the right things to say and could cuddle Kaylee to make her feel better. The girl was gonna need lots of carin’ and he weren’t the best person to be doin’ it.

“Jayne,” Kaylee’s breath caught on a sob, “I just want ya right now. Please.”

***************

Jack sat at the table and eyed the comm. unit. He badly wanted to call Kaylee’s captain right now. But he couldn’t. Jayne had said to wait till morning and it wasn’t even full dark yet.

Maybe he shoulda stopped her goin’ to check the snares. But she was bound and determined to do the right thing and he knew his girl was both strong and resourceful. So he hadn’t stopped her and now he was wonderin’ what Lily was gonna say if anythin’ happened to their little girl. He should never started this. Because he’d got on his high horse Steve was dead, Kaylee was missin’ and Jayne was riskin’ his life lookin’ for her.

Tryin’ to stop the worry from takin’ over he was tidyin’ the supplies Jayne bought when the warnin’ bells rang and he tensed, hand reachin’ for the rifle. Risin’ slowly he limped to the window and peered out cautiously.

Buddha be praised it was Jayne! But what had gone wrong? Kaylee was unmovin’ in his arms and they were being trailed by another man.

“Jayne,” he flung open the door. “Is Kaylee?”

“She ain’t dead. But I need to look at her hurts, give her some smoothers.”

“I need cleanin’ up Daddy.”

Jack hardly recognised Kaylee’s voice; and when she raised her head to smile at him he was shocked at her swollen eyes and bruised face. “I can help…” he moved to take his daughter from the mercenary.

“No.” Jayne growled at him, hands tightening possessively round the little body. “She don’t want ya seein’ her yet.” He nodded to the man who’d come in with him. “This here’s my cousin Bobby. He’ll keep ya company.”

“I don’t want to be kept company,” Jack stormed at the other man. “That’s my daughter in there and I want to see her.”

“She don’t want ya to see the bad things,” Bobby soothed. “And Jayne ain’t likely to let ya do anythin’ to upset her. Just wait till he gets her cleaned up a mite and ya can go sit with her and hold her hand.”

***************

Mal stretched his back and surveyed the fortifications around the house. “Not bad,” he declared. “If trouble comes, herd everyone inside and keep ‘em behind the barriers; if anyone gets inside, head for the kitchen.”

“Do ya think it’ll come to that?” Kaylee’s brother asked.

“You can never tell which way the wind’ll blow in a battle. It’s best to be ready for anything.”

He was hoping they were ready for anything the bad guys might throw at them; because now they had more non-combatants than ever taking up refuge at the farm. As well as Lou Anne, two families from outlying farms had arrived this morning. Their farms had been hit by ‘raiders’ and it was only luck that no-one was killed or seriously injured.

“I want to post look-outs at every point around the farm,” he started briskly.

“We don’t have to worry about any attacks today.” the Shepherd remarked as he and Zoë entered the room.

“Why not?” Mal asked.

“There’s quite a furore in town,” Book continued. “One of the hunting parties returned with the bodies of the Sheriff and his men.”

“Their bodies?”

“They were out hunting our people and were expected back last night; when they didn’t return the other parties went looking for them.”

There wasn’t much left of the Sheriff to recognise. He was shot more than once at point blank range with Vera.

“You sure it was Vera?”

“No mistake sir,” Zoë replied. “Nothing else would make those holes.”

“And everyone’s dead?”

“The whole party except for two who the foreman appears to think ran off.”

“Can you show me where the bodies were found?” Mal turned to get the map from the shelf.

“The other party found the horses wandering, close to town, here,” Ben pointed to the map. “The bodies were tied to the horses.”

“That good sir?” Zoe queried.

“It’s nowhere near the hiding place, so that’s good. I’m just wondering why Jayne was out there and what got him so angry is all.”

“Do you think something’s gone wrong, that they might need help?” Lily enquired anxiously.

Mal shook his head. “Jayne’s got a comm. unit with him. He’d call us if necessary.”

***************

Jack sat and watched as Kaylee slept. Whatever Jayne had given her had caused her to sleep right through the night and half-way through the mornin’. He was worried about the extent of his girl’s injuries. Her wrists were heavily bandaged and the bruises and cuts stood out on her face. For the first time in his life Jack wanted to kill someone.
“The folks that did this?” he asked the man sittin’ across from him.

“Dead,” Jayne grunted not takin’ his eyes of Kaylee’s face.

There was so much Jack wanted to ask the younger man, but the expression on his face stopped him. Jayne looked like he was goin’ to explode any moment. His body was stiff with tension, his eyes were burnin’ with weariness and he kept openin’ and closin’ his fists like he wanted to hit somethin’.

“Why don’t ya go get somethin’ to eat, have a rest?” Jack suggested.

“When Kaylee wakes up.” Jayne’s face set in a mulish expression.

All this waitin’ was drivin’ him as batty as the crazy girl. He needed to see Kaylee wake up and look at him. At least then he’d know that he’d looked after her okay last night. But that weren’t enough, the girl needed better than him.

They’d wait a couple of days, let Kaylee heal some. Then they were headin’ back down to the farm so the Doc could check her out. Then Jayne was gonna do some huntin’; and kill every single person had somethin’ to do with hurtin’ his girl.

Protective Jayne is very scary, I'm glad he killed those guys! And yes Bobby does look a little like Jayne. (In my head) He has blue eyes, is nearly as tall, has the same cheekbones etc...

That's vintage Jayne at his most fiercesome, and quite possibly, his most appealing. Who wouldn't want the man who loves us to be that way if he had to sit and do nothing... *Sniff* for Kaylee though..
