To die freezing wasn’t preferable to dying breathless; River wished she’d never thought it so. The thought of her brother or any of the others dying either way terrified her and jangled her mind. Her companions thought the same, their chaotic thoughts impinged on hers and her pulse spiralled.
One voice rose above the others and she latched onto its solidity. Steady hands went about their work to the accompaniment of a litany. Calm, be calm. Don’t talk. Don’t fight. Calm, be calm.
River exhaled slowly and partially comforted, sat next to Jayne to hear the Captain’s talk. Calm…
