“What do you mean Serenity’s left without me?” Mal’s voice rose to a shout. “That’s my ship you’re talking about.”
“A ship you won’t be able to walk around if you don’t rest now,” Inara retorted.
“I could’ve rested there on my own boat.”
“No you couldn’t Mal. You would never have been able to stay out of things.”
“I can’t believe you let them do this to me.”
“I didn’t let them,” Inara paused. “I suggested it.”
“What’s all this?” Marie Asgard demanded as she entered the room. “You’re supposed to be resting Captain Reynolds.”
She touched a gentle hand to Mal’s forehead and reached for a cloth. “You strike me as a sensible man, so why not behave like one and co-operate? The more you rest, the faster you’ll heal.”
Mal leant back against the pillows as she checked his pulse. He was feeling awful weak and he’d hardly even sat up, maybe Inara and Marie had the right idea; he could stand down for awhile. “It’s awful boring lying here,” he complained.
“We can be bored together,” Inara smiled at him in relief. She knew that was his way of co-operating for the moment.
“I’m sure I can find something to keep you both occupied.” Marie smiled too and bustled out immediately.
“Resting is all well and good ‘Nara, but you know we’re finally getting back on an even keel. How are we going to keep Serenity afloat while I’m gone?”
“Zoë and Jayne know all your contacts, they can look for jobs as well as you. Zoë’s already negotiated a small job with some of the local farmers. They will be transporting cargo once a month from the moon. That way you can check up on them periodically.”
“Once a month, how long am I s’posed to be here then?”
“Three months…”
“Three months! ‘Nara!” Mal was incredulous.
“Now Mal,” Inara sighed, and started to placate him all over again.

“Kinda restful ain’t they?” Kaylee observed as she leant over the catwalk railing admiring the llamas below.
“Lot less messy than those cows,” Jayne agreed watchin’ her warily. “Ya been waitin’ on me or somethin’?”
“Yeah,” she grinned at him quietly. “I’m sorry for sayin’ what I did ‘bout Nisham and Zoë; didn’t mean to push things or nothin’.”
She shoulda known better than to say anythin’ to him about his feelings. But she was so happy with Simon she wanted to share that around. Mal and Inara were together, she and Simon, River would find someone soon, and Jayne wanted Zoë.
He didn’t know that though. It had taken their talk in the dinin’ room the other day for Kaylee to realise that her friend had no clue what he was feelin’ for the second in command.
“Ya just got the wrong end of the stick is all,” Jayne shrugged.
Nisham and his talk about partners and treating them right had unsettled him. Then Kaylee come along talkin’ ‘bout Zoë, it just made him uncomfortable; worried him some. ‘Cause he could see that her and Nisham fitted good, did well together.
“Ya know it don’t mean nothin’ don’t ya? She’d never leave Serenity or the Captain.”
“Maybe not,” Jayne shrugged again. But things changed and so did people, ya never knew what might happen.

“So things are going smoothly then?” Nisham’s face smiled at her over the wave.
“They’re much quieter than the cows, that’s for sure.” Zoë nodded, “and I already got us some work once we drop them. I’m not used to all this easy going, it’s unsettling.”
“Don’t worry I’m sure something will happen to disturb it.” He reassured her.
“It always does. Our next job takes us to the Laurenten skyplex, we’ll be there in two weeks.”
“So will I, approximately.” Nisham looked pleased. “You interested in meeting again?”
Zoë thought about his offer for a moment. She was surprised how easily she and he had slipped into friendship. To be truthful she was sorta suspicious of it. But she did like and enjoy his company and this was her goal. “I’d be happy to,” she said with a nod.
“Just dinner, or would you be interested in dancing too? I know a place that has both.”
Wash had been a dreadful dancer, all enthusiasm and no skill. They’d mainly cuddled when there was dancing going on; Zoë stifled a sigh. “I’m warning you I’m a mite out of practice with the dancing.”
“It’ll give me a chance to show off my skills then,” Nisham joked. “I’ll wave you again before landing and my mother will be in contact with Simon weekly.”
“Fine,” Zoë smiled, broke the connection and turned to find Jayne watching her silently. “How long have you been there?” she demanded more than a mite unsettled that he’d heard her conversation.
“You wanted my help remember?” He frowned at her. “With givin’ the gorramn llamas their innocs.”
“That I did,” she nodded still disturbed. “But I’m still interested in knowing why you didn’t tell me you were there.”
Jayne looked at her as if she needed her head read. “Ya were talkin’, I just waited till ya finished.”
“Got anything to say about it?”
“Nope.” He’d been goin’ to say plenty. Had it all rehearsed and everythin’. But that was before he saw how relaxed she was. For the first time in two years Zoë was relaxed and smilin’ a real smile. He weren’t about to interfere with that.
