“I think Zoë should start with Wash,” Kaylee was gleeful. “He always folds easily.”
“That’s very true, but the first order of business,” Inara rapped smartly on the table, “Is to distract Jayne.”
“Am I missing something here?” asked Zoë.
“I believe Jayne has sisters?”
“Five of them,” Kaylee nodded. “Oh…”
“Yes. He knows we won’t take this lying down and is probably looking forward to teasing the others about it. We don’t want him to let them know what’s happening too early.”
“Couldn’t we just tell him what we’re doin’? He’s good at keepin’ secrets.”
“No,” Inara shook her head. “I’m certain Mal made him make the same promise or take an oath or something else equally manly. I think this time we treat them all the same.”
******************
“What’s that?” Wash spotted the strange box in their room straight away and headed over to investigate.
“One of Inara’s clients gave it to her. She thought I might like it, but it’s not really my thing.”
“Oh?” the pilot was intrigued and delving into the box hooked his fingers into a piece of furry material. “Oooooh,” his eyes widened as he glanced at his wife speculatively and dangled the outfit in mid-air.
“I’m guessing you don’t have the same opinion then?”
Zoë’s lips quirked in a teasing grin and Wash’s heart speeded up. He shook his head wordlessly and gazed at her with pleading in his eyes.
“Well, maybe I could wear it for Valentine’s Day then. The Captain’s kept me so busy I forgot to buy you anything.”
Wash gulped nervously. Thanks to Mal he didn’t have a thing to give his wife on Valentine’s Day and he knew what her reaction would be. He looked at the outfit still dangling from his fingers. He wanted to see Zoe in and out of it in the worse way.
Gulping again, he gave here his biggest smile. “It’s a date lambie-toes and I for one can’t wait!”
With that he dumped the outfit back in its box and bounded up the ladder.
******************
“Jayne!” Wash burst into the cargo bay. “You’ve got to help me!”
Jayne sighed impatiently and kept doin’ pull-ups. Maybe the little man would get the message and go away. He’d already done his quota of helpin’ folks today and weren’t gonna do anymore. ‘Course helpin’ Kaylee were definitely better than doin’ whatever Wash wanted him to be doin’.
At first he’d been a mite suspicious of the girl’s motives. He’d been expectin’ some sorta retaliation from the women on board for days. They’d have ferreted out the Captain’s plan somehow, probably just by lookin’ at that smug smirk; and be plottin’ somethin’ girly and vengeful. But nothin’ had happened till Kaylee had come this mornin’ and asked for his help with the engine.
She’d looked so relieved when he agreed to help (she never could hide her feelings worth a good gorramn), that he’d been instantly on guard. But the moment he saw the engine he knew she weren’t foolin’ him any. There was no way she’d ever let her girl get in that condition just to get his co-operation. They’d worked together all day and had at least another days’ work to go, so he weren’t lookin’ to do anythin’ else today, no how; no matter how much Wash begged.
But the pilot wasn’t goin’ away. He kept dancin’ around and yelpin’ to get Jayne’s attention. It were ruttin’ irritatin’.
Jayne dropped to the ground abruptly and grinned at Wash’s startled exclamation. “What d’ya want?”
******************
Wash looked around surreptitiously as he opened the locker on the bridge. It was 2.00 am according to the chrono and no-one should be around. But he’d learnt with this crew to always expect the unexpected so he kept it stealthy. Quietly he lay the wrapping paper on the console and placed the present on top of it.
“I tell you Jayne,” the Captain clattered up the stairs. “That there is the worst smell I ever did smell. Wash,” he noticed the pilot standing dumbfounded in the middle of the bridge. “What’re you…”
His voice trailed off when he spied the gun lying loose on the console. “What’s that?”
“It’s a gun Mal,” Jayne supplied helpfully.
“And it’s a mighty fine one too. I might be wondering where you got it,” Mal rounded on Wash. “Except I’m wondering more about the wrapping paper under it?”
Wash looked around the bridge helplessly. “It’s to keep the oil of the console?” he offered hopefully.
“It’s to wrap the gorramn gun in that’s what it’s for.” The Captain glared at his pilot. “You haven’t even lasted a week, not even a week and you’re wrapping a rutting present on the bridge. What’s next; a cake, a party, folks expecting me to be all celebratory?”
“But Mal,” Wash whined. “Zoë’s going to be wearing this outfit. It’s furry and…”
“I don’t want to hear it!” Mal exclaimed.
“I could stand to hear a little more,” Jayne leant against the wall havin’ a whale of a time.
“Jayne, you don’t want to be saying anything or I might get curious about that gun.”
“Aw Mal.”
“You’re a backslider, that’s what you are.” Mal crossed his arms over his chest and glared at Wash. “You’ve still got a chance.”
“Nope.” Wash shook his head resolutely. “I’m giving this to Zoë and I’m going to get the best Valentine’s gift ever and all the glaring in the verse ain’t going to stop me.”
