Hi there flisters! I got the start of a Valentine's story today in my email, but the writers can't finish it. They suggested I post it at [livejournal.com profile] ff_roundrobin but since the lack of response over there at the moment is making me sad, I thought I'd post it here instead...

Now the mission - should you choose to accept it is :-

I'll post the first chapter here and someone offers to help me finish it in time for Valentine's day.

Title: The Cupid Caper: Chapter one
Characters: all the crew, ships can develop
Rating: PG
Word Count: 752
Comments: Basic premise from the original writers - Mal has gathered the men of Serenity together to form a coalition. If they stick together they can get through Valentine's day unscathed! I'm envisioning that the men will end up one by one betraying the oath somehow.

He’d lost lots of battles in his day; tried to move past ‘em, but each one had a lesson for him somewhere among the fallen bodies and the bloodshed.

He hadn’t expected to lose this last one. Had thought he’d considered every angle; gone over every strategy until he just knew he was gonna win. But somewhere in the middle—or was it at the very end?—the tides had turned on him and he’d had to content himself with licking his wounds until he could fight another day.

The other day had come.

And there wasn’t no way he was gonna lose this battle. It was too gorramn important. He had a new plan. Form an alliance with others who were in the same boat as him. A brotherhood if you will.

He met with the potential members of his collaboration at a safe house—a local pub what housed renegades like himself from time to time. Most importantly, it was unknown to the enemy.

Mal looked slowly around the table at the motley group that had gathered.

“Well, you’ve heard the plan and you know it’ll work best if we all stick together. Time for you all to say your piece.”

It seemed only fair that the one with the most to lose would speak first.

“Yeah, but Mal, come on. You couldn’t stop the Christmas party. How’re you gonna keep Valentine’s Day off your boat? My wife expects candy and flowers. Well, maybe not the flowers so much as some new ammunition, but still…”

"Zoe ain't no fragile flower, Wash. She'll get over it." Sensing the apprehension in his pilot, Mal added, "Besides, we won't be near a planet for 3 days before or after the gorram day. She probably won't even expect anything."

"Naw. These womanfolk are always rememberin' shit like that. I mean, I ain't got no reason to not go along with your little plan, but I ain't married to Zoe, either."

"Then we're all agreed?" Mal looked to the remaining two male members of his crew. "Doc, Shepherd? You okay with this?"

"Well...I...It's..."

"I think what the boy means," the shepherd interjected, "is that we'll support you in your endeavor, Captain. Might be it would relieve the anxiety of having to choose a gift for a certain someone." He raised his eyebrows at Simon.

"Yes," the man was clearly relieved and Mal nearly laughed, wondering if he'd considered just how much trouble he could get in with Kaylee if he didn't buy her a present.

Still, it weren't none of his concern. As long as he didn't have to deal with another holiday on his boat, that was all that mattered.

"You really ain't gonna get 'Nara nothin' for Valentine's, Mal?" Jayne asked.

"Nope."

"You ain't got no sisters, do ya?" Jayne laughed when Mal shook his head, perplexed at the question. "You got no idea the can o' worms you're openin' up. No ruttin' idea."

The big man's chuckles as he went after another beer sounded all kinds of ominous to Mal.

“They’re up to something.” Inara passed cups around.

“Even the Shepherd,” Kaylee agreed.

River nodded owlishly. “It’s a conspiracy!”

“There’s been a lot of bustling around about the new job.”

“An increase of loving remarks.”

“Lot’s of lecturin’.”

“Boobishness has grown exponentially.”

“The only one acting remotely normal is Jayne and that’s disturbing.”

They sipped thoughtfully at their tea.

“What do ya think they’re up to?” Kaylee asked.

“Trying to avoid Valentine’s Day most likely,” Zoë replied.

“But why? That’s plain mean.” Kaylee pouted. “I was lookin’ forward to it and so was River.”

“An archaic custom, based on outmoded mores and ideas with much kissing.” River looked thoughtful. “Kissing is desired, why the avoidance?”

“There’s presents too girl and that makes folks anxious,” Zoë continued. “And you know what the Captain’s like about parties.”

“Presents are nice. But I just wanted a good time, a bit of relaxin’.” Kaylee said indignantly, “the Captain doesn’t have to come.”

“No he doesn’t,” Inara agreed the light of battle in her eyes. “While ordinarily I don’t see the appeal of Valentine’s Day, I think this year I would like to celebrate it.”

“How’re we gonna do that if the fellas won’t co-operate?”

Zoë and Inara exchanged glances. “They’ll co-operate mei mei. We just have to divide and conquer. By the time the big day comes around everyone will be celebrating.”

River bounced in her seat nearly upsetting the teacups. “Let the battle commence!”
