Kaylee stood rigid, fist clenched against her mouth, back pushed to the infirmary wall.
Anxiety gripped her. Frantic activity swirled around her. The others’ voices were background to the horror she felt as the engines roared and for the first time in her life she hardly listened to them.
This couldn’t be happenin’. She hadn’t even known she cared. Turnin’ away from the pool of red blood and yellow shirt on the floor, she fixed her eyes on Jayne’s face willin’ him to wake up and look at her, say somethin’. But he was gone - and there was only silence.
