Kaylee screamed as the burnin’ end of the cigar bit into her skin, the pain seemed to go on forever and she couldn’t think.

“That hurt didn’t it?” Brett queried. “All you have to do is tell me where your father and the mercenary are and I won’t do it again.”

She shook her head and didn’t answer. Her throat hurt, her skin was burnin’ and she wasn’t sure she could talk. But all her wrigglin’ had caused the knots around her wrists to loosen and she focused on tryin’ to escape. Tears of pain runnin’ down her cheeks, Kaylee looked defiantly at Brett and pulled gently at the knots.

“I’m surprised at you Kaylee,” the Sheriff shook his head. “You’ve changed, and not for the better. Of course after meeting some of the riff-raff you fly with and seeing the hunk of junk you travel in, I suppose it’s natural.”

Kaylee frowned at the insult to Serenity, but kept quiet. Plain as plain she could hear Jayne tellin’ her one of his stories. If ya don’t talk they gotta, it’s some sort of reflex. So she stayed silent and picked at the rope while Brett talked.

“What really amazes me is your sleeping with that man. I thought you had some standards at least. I suppose you had to in order to get his support.”

Angry now as well as frightened Kaylee found her voice to snap at him. “Jayne’s better ‘n’ ya without even tryin’.”

“Is he now?” the man’s tone was deadly and again he thrust the burning cigar against her side.

***************

Jayne shook his head to clear it. Him worryin’ like this was not gonna help Kaylee, he weren’t thinkin’ straight and he needed to so he could find her.

Takin’ a slow, even breath, he thought back. When he’d entered the canyon he hadn’t seen any sign of Kaylee. That meant that whatever had happened to her had more than likely been while she were checkin’ the traps.

Where he’d sent her he thought as he started lookin’ for her there. Head down he studied Kaylee’s tracks. She’d had no trouble here, just collected the rabbits and walked on. It wasn’t till the last snare that he saw signs of trouble. The girl had done well here too fightin’ off her attacker and runnin’ away.

Doggedly Jayne walked on, tracin’ her path and findn’ where she’d hidden. Judgin’ from her footsteps, the girl was gettin’ mighty weary and it was obvious that though she’d put up a good fight, the bad guys were gonna win. The first fella she’d tangled with had been on his own and easier to get the better of. But now, lookin’ at the tracks goin’ every which way, he could see there were just too many of them.

Kaylee was usin’ her brains and not headin’ straight for the canyon, keepin’ the bad guys away from her Daddy. But it was makin’ her trip longer and that might make it easier for her to get found in the end.

Hearin’ voices ahead, he dropped immediately to the ground and wriggled forward till he could see and hear what they were sayin’.

Three men were on the path. One was on the ground bein’ helped up by the only uninjured fella there. The last man was standin’, but groanin’ and rubbin’ his head gingerly.

”Little bitch,” the man’s voice was harsh. “I’m gonna make her pay.”

“No ya ain’t. The boss wants the two of ya to go back to town and tell Douglas to get the gallows ready.”

“Ya found the others then?”

“Nope, but the girl’s gonna tell us where they are.”

“Not that one,” the first gan ni niang contradicted. “She’s tougher than we got told.”

“Maybe, but the boss has got his cigar and she’s all strung up,” the other man shrugged. “Won’t take long.”

Jayne could hardly contain his fury at what they were sayin’. He’d heard enough.

Carefully placin’ Vera on the ground he jumped up and burst through the bushes. Lashin’ out with his fist he caught the wobbly guy on the temple causin’ him to tumble bonelessly to the ground.

The other two men turned toward him, the talky one goin’ for his gun. Not wantin’ any sound to carry, Jayne’s hand whipped up and his knife thudded into the man’s ribs. Leavin’ him bleedin’ on the ground, the mercenary’s hand shot out and grabbed the last man by the throat, hoistin’ him up in the air and throwin’ him against a tree.

“Where’s Kaylee?” the feral gleam in Jayne’s intensified as he thought of what they’d been sayin’. “Ya tell me and I won’t peel yer skin off.”

The other man glared at him, but Jayne could see him thinkin’. “Yer only in this for the money ain’t ya? If ya tell me, ya get to live and earn more coin. But ya ain’t got long – I’m gettin’ impatient.”

“They’re backaways, ‘bout half a mile, in a clearin’,” the man nodded to his left, “too busy watchin’ the boss torture yer girl to be payin’ much attention to their surroundings.”

Involuntarily, Jayne’s hand tightened on his informant’s throat. People were gonna die, if Kaylee was hurt. The sound of chokin’ brought him up short and droppin’ the man he turned to grab his knife and get Vera.

Scoopin’ his favourite from the ground Jayne was headed in Kaylee’s direction when he heard her scream.

His blood boilin’ he took off runnin’ toward the sound, rage makin’ him careless as he crashed through the brush. Kaylee screamed again and Jayne quickened his pace even more, his face settlin’ into grim, determined lines.

Followin’ the pain-filled sound, he came to the edge of the clearin’ and skidded to a halt. Shouts and catcalls filled the air as he peered through the trees to see his girl hangin’ tied up. She screamed again, her breath catchin’ on a sob as the sheriff pushed somethin’ at her. The other Huh choo-shang tza-jiao duh tzang-huos, except for one lyin’ on the ground, were cheerin’ him on and payin’ no attention to their surroundings.

Raisin’ Vera ready to fire, his pistol in his other hand, Jayne stepped from cover and fired at the man closest to him. At the sound of the shot the Sheriff turned and his crew scattered, drawin’ their weapons as they moved.

Takin’ advantage of her torturer’s momentary inattention, Kaylee jerked violently at the loosened knot around her wrists. Finally they gave way and landin’ shakily on her feet, she started to move cautiously toward Jayne.

Brett snarled and reached for her but she staggered away from him, intent on gettin’ to Jayne. The Sheriff grabbed for her again and succeeded in knockin’ her to the ground. Landin’ on her back, winded, Kaylee lashed out with her heel, catchin’ the hun dan between the legs. He howled in pain and lurched forward as she kicked him again, her heel thumpin’ against his chin.

Jayne, dodgin’ weapons fire, could see Kaylee’s struggle with the sheriff outta the corner of his eye, and desperate to get to her, swung Vera round, finger depressin’ the trigger. A hail of bullets spat from the gun, cuttin’ a swath through his opponents, causin’ them that were left to fire back.

He fired on the run, systematically shootin’ down every one of them. Their return fire was peterin’ out and ceased altogether just as he reached Kaylee who was staggerin’ to her feet, the Sheriff’s gun in her hand.

Her eyes lit up when she saw him and he moved forward quickly; wantin’ to touch her, make sure she was alright. Beside her the Sheriff stirred, reachin’ up to grab her ankle. Kaylee gasped in terror and whirled, gun ready to shoot, when she was pulled behind Jayne and almost deafened by the roar of Vera.

Determined to help him, and not wantin’ to see what happened to Brett; Kaylee stood at Jayne’s back watchin’ for any threats. But the only person that she could see that was still alive and tryin’ to stand was the man who had helped her earlier.

“Ya ok?’ he asked wobblin’ to his feet.

Hearin’ a voice that definitely wasn’t Kaylee, Jayne swiftly jerked around, ready to shoot the last threat.

“Jayne it’s me!”

“Jayne no!”

The two voices mingled, but it was Kaylee’s hoarse choke Jayne heard. He lowered the gun and turned to her.

“He helped me,” she whispered, clutchin’ his arm as her legs gave out.

Jayne wrapped his arm round her body but stopped at her hiss of pain. “Kaylee?”

His eyes were cold as he took in the burns (burns!), cuts and bruises on her creamy skin. With a visible shudder he controlled his temper, that weren’t gonna help the girl now, and concentrated on gettin’ her back to the cabin so he could look after her properly.

Cuppin’ his hand under her elbow, the only unmarked bit of skin he could see, he turned to the other man, and ordered. “Get me somethin’ soft to wrap round her.”

Kaylee looked up at him, his face waverin’ in front of her. “Jayne?” was all she could manage, her throat hurt so much.

“Can’t carry ya without it,” he explained.

She nodded quietly and tryin’ to stop the tremblin’, moved so she could bury her head against the safety of his chest.

“Ssh,” Jayne could feel the tears soakin’ through his shirt, and the shivers wrackin’ her body. Not knowin’ what else to do, and wantin’ to comfort her, he stroked her hair lightly. “Ssh.”

Of course, I'm curious to know who this other stranger is that knows Jayne. I'm more curious to see how Kaylee is going to deal with being tortured and how Jayne will deal with that. She's going to have more than physical scars and I wonder if Jayne isn't going to take the blame for it.
