ceslas and myself, a bit of a different pairing for both of us…
Zoë stood and surveyed herself in the mirror. She really wasn’t sure if she were doing the right thing. But during this last year she’d realised that she couldn’t go on just existing without Wash. He wouldn’t have liked or expected it.
In fact, she suspected that her man would have been the first to push her into some sort of action. He would have pushed a lot earlier too, maybe illustrating his point with his dinos, or more than likely, telling her straight out what he thought.
She missed him still, probably always would, and surprisingly she missed being part of a couple. Although she definitely wasn’t ready for that; she was determined to take the first step toward living again and providing herself with some sort of male companionship was her goal.
It was taking that first step that was proving to be the problem. Never one to sleep around much, any skills she had in that direction had long since been lost. Also, she had no inclination for all that flirty get to know you stuff that might never lead anywhere. She was loath to trust most folks too, and finding a suitable fella had proved difficult.
But now she’d found a man she both trusted and respected, one who was plain about his intentions. And since his ideas pretty much matched hers she’d agreed to this day out with him.
The timing clashed with their planned rendezvous with Patience and she had almost cancelled, but Inara had encouraged her to go and the Captain promised to keep it low key.
Knowing him and the old Mayor as she did, she sorta doubted that. But Jayne would be there and he was his grouchy, paranoid self and wouldn’t let anything happen to the Captain.

“It don’t look that hospitable, does it?” Kaylee remarked gesturin’ to the moon outside.
“Never does,” Jayne agreed as he surveyed the landscape.
“Still the job won’t take that long and then we can go to town.” Kaylee grinned. She was lookin’ forward to goin’ shoppin’ with Simon and maybe havin’ dinner, just the two of them.
“If it goes smooth and that ain’t exactly guaranteed when the old harridan is involved.”
“Patience is all respectable now,” Mal assured as he joined them. “She hasn’t shot anyone in almost a year.”
“That ya know of,” Jayne returned sourly.
Mal and Patience never did get on, always tryin’ to one up each other. It was just as well Zoë was goin’ along. She at least wouldn’t let the old woman goad her into anythin’ and most times prevented the Captain from gettin’ them all killed.
“Everybody’s making a fuss,” Mal shrugged. “Things will go fine if we stick to the plan and no-one does anything stupid. Let’s get going and get it over with.”
“I’m ready; it’s Zoë we’re waitin’ for.”
“Zoë ain’t coming.”
“She ain’t comin’?” Jayne’s voice was incredulous, “she always comes.”
“Is somethin’ wrong Captain?” Kaylee was worried. “Is Zoë alright?”
“She’s got a meeting is all; it’s nothing for folks to get het up about.” Mal hopped onto the mule to forestall anymore argument. “Jayne, you’re driving.”
Wordlessly Jayne swung onto the front seat and started the engine. Zoë never let Mal go on a job by himself. The last time she had was when him and the little man got pinched by Niska and look how that turned out.
Even when she were grievin’ so bad for Wash she’d come on the job. He figured that’d been all that held her together back then. Now when she was finally gettin’ better and not so sad, now she weren’t comin’ on the job? It didn’t seem right.

I like it so far! It's just enough post-BDM to make it believable and you've set up a scenario that should get someone thinking/jealous.
Can't wait to see what you two have planned!

*giggle* I love how Jayne has more common sense than Mal.
Great Zoe!
