Jayne waited for a moment, not willin’ to believe that Kaylee weren’t here. “Where is she?” he repeated.

“She went to check the traps,” Jack replied dully.

“She should be back by now.” He’d cleared the snares before leavin’, the job wouldn’tve taken her more than an hour.

Jack swallowed painfully, “I know.” If anythin’ happened to his little girl cause of the trouble he’d started he was never gonna forgive himself. “What are ya doin’?”

Jayne had dropped the supplies in the middle of the room and headed towards the bedroom.

“Gettin’ Vera,” he replied as he strapped on the weapon and reached for some of his smaller guns. “Here,” a comm. unit was thrust into Jack’s hands. “If I ain’t back by mornin’ call the Captain.”

“I’m comin’.”

“No, ya can’t keep up and ya need to be here in case Kaylee comes back.”

“Ya don’t think she’s comin’ back.”

“No,” Jayne’s voice was toneless. Kaylee was dependable. Somethin’ had happened to her and standin’ here jawin’ weren’t gonna help. He sure didn’t have time for this comfortin’ stuff. “Stay here,” he reiterated and without a backward glance strode out the door.

******************

Graspin’ the rabbits tightly and tryin’ to keep a good look-out, Kaylee walked cautiously along. Seein’ the searchers had really given her a fright and she couldn’t wait to get back to the relative safety of the canyon. It wouldn’t be long now and Jayne would be back, she’d be so glad to see him, to talk over what was happenin’ back at home.

They needed to talk too ‘bout what was gonna happen when they went back to Serenity. They’d agreed on the just for now but she for one was (maybe) reconsiderin’ it. She weren’t quite ready to be givin’ him up just yet and that was sorta a shock to her. But she’d missed him so bad last night…

Her thoughts were rudely interrupted when heavy arms grabbed her round the waist and a harsh voice said, “caught ya.”

Reactin’ just like Jayne taught her, Kaylee flung her head back catchin’ her captor on the chin. His grip loosened and with all the force she could muster she jerked her elbow into his stomach and heard the satisfyin’ whoosh of air as he dropped his arms completely. Stampin’ down hard on his foot, Kaylee whirled and ran as fast as she could go, away from the creek and canyon entrance.

Behind her the fella was bellowin’ for all he was worth, but true to Jayne’s instructions she didn’t look around, just kept goin’ hard. Terrified that the fella wasn’t alone, that he had others with him, she glanced round to check for followers and banged her head on a tree.

Tumblin’ to the ground she rolled into a hollow and came to rest under the roots of a tree. Her head was achin’, she couldn’t see proper and for the moment she couldn’t move. For now, here was as good a hidin’ place as any, Kaylee thought. Her coveralls merged with the ground and the roots hid her from view so she stayed still and listened to the approachin’ voices.

“Where’d she go?”

“She can’t have got far.”

“Wouldn’tve got anywhere if ya’d just kept hold of her.”

“The little bitch caught me by surprise. She ain’t as helpless as we got told.”

“Don’t matter what we got told, we gotta find her…”

Kaylee’s head was clearin’ some and the voices were fadin’, but she stayed motionless and tried to stay calm.

She had no idea what to do. With them out there lookin’ for her; it’d be hard to make it back to the canyon. She couldn’t stay here either. It wasn’t long till night time, it were getting’ cold and she weren’t dressed for it. Daddy would be worryin’, and Jayne would be back and gettin’ all antsy ‘cause she weren’t there.

Thinkin’ of their worry, Kaylee was galvanised to move. Warily she shifted her head, but subsided to the ground again as everything swam around her. Why’d she have to go hit her head, make everythin’ worse? She needed to go and go now, before her pursuers came back. Quietly she eased the gun out of her pocket. She didn’t think she could actually shoot one of them, but if they found her again maybe firing it would distract them long enough for her to get away.

Usin’ the roots for support she pulled herself to her feet, waited for her head to stop swimmin’ and headed again towards the canyon.

Her trip was much slower this time; she had to keep stoppin’ to rest and sometimes to hide from the men lookin’ for her. Avoidin’ them was takin’ all her energy, if Jayne were here he wouldn’t be hidin’, he’d be huntin’, whittlin’ the numbers down some, slowin’ them down. Maybe she could do the same.

In her pocket she had a length of line that Jayne used for his snares. Pullin’ it out Kaylee eyed it, considerin’. She walked on till she found a good place and tied the line low to the ground between two trees and waited.

It didn’t take long for two hunters to appear just ahead of her. Rustlin’ a few leaves, she flitted quickly over to a thicket of bushes. Sure enough the hun dans turned and came back her way catchin’ their boots in the strong line and fallin’ heavily. Kaylee darted out from behind the bushes and, without stoppin’ to think, banged them on the head with the butt of the gun.

Wincin’ to herself she hurried on round the bend and found herself surrounded by men, Brett Willock standin’ in the middle smilin’ at her in a creepifyin’ way.

“Well now, what have we here?” he asked. “I’d advise you to drop the weapon Kaylee; my men aren’t too happy with you right now.”

Her eyes flickerin’ to the group around her, Kaylee dropped the gun. For the moment she had no chance against them, if they thought she was beaten, she could use that to her advantage and try to escape later. Or maybe Jayne would come. He’d be lookin’ for her she knew, as soon as he found out she were missin’.

“Good girl,” Brett nodded approvingly and turned to one of his men. “Go back and send those two cretins back to town. I want them to tell Douglas we’ll have Frye and the mercenary soon. He needs to get the gallows ready.”

Kaylee shivered at the tone in Brett’s voice, the real hatred she heard there. No way was she gonna deliver her Daddy or Jayne up to that.

“Now Kaylee, you could avoid any unpleasantness by telling me where your father and Cobb are. If you tell me,” he went on persuasively. “I’ll treat them fairly and you can go home to your mother.”

“You just told that fella to get the gallows ready.” Kaylee tried not to show how scared she was.

“Yes I did. But that order can be rescinded if you co-operate. I really don’t want to torture you girl.”

Torture her?, Kaylee shivered again but didn’t answer him. He wasn’t to be trusted, she knew that now. He’d probably killed Steve, who hadn’t even done anything, and wanted to kill Daddy and Jayne. Who knew what he wanted to really do to her.

“Don’t think she’s gonna answer you boss,” one of the men chuckled.
“No,” Brett agreed with a shrug and looked her straight in the eyes. “Remember Kaylee you bought this on yourself.”

He gave a signal and his men converged, grabbin’ hold of her roughly and rippin’ at her clothes. Kaylee kicked and screamed as their hands pushed at her skin and her nethers. She swung a clenched fist and caught one man on the nose and another in the throat. But there were too many of them and she ended up with her wrists tied above her head and hangin’ from a tree.

Humiliated and terrified Kaylee kept tryin’ to avoid the still touchin’ hands while curlin’ her fingers over the knots holdin’ her. One man’s hands fastened around her throat and another pulled violently at her hair and she was fadin’ fast when everybody around her was sent flyin’.

“What the hell Riley?” the Sheriff snarled.

“I didn’t sign on for hurtin’ folks who’ve done nothin’.”

Kaylee looked at the fella hopefully and kept worryin’ at the knots round her wrist. He reminded her of someone she thought hazily, but her brain just weren’t workin’ the way it should right now.

“You signed on to do anything that was asked of you and interfering with my pleasure wasn’t one of those things.”

“There ain’t nothin’ pleasurable about watchin’ girls get hurt,” the fella stood with fists clenched ready to fight.

“Well you’re right there,” agreed the Sheriff. “I’d rather be hurting them myself.” He lit a cigar and puffed contentedly as his men moved away from Kaylee and started working over the dissenter instead.

“I’m afraid I might hurt you a little,” he blew smoke in her face. “I really must know where your father and Cobb are Kaylee.” Taking the cigar out of his mouth he pressed it to her stomach and smiled. “The ends really do justify the means.”

First off - Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!! Yay, you!!!

Now, about the story:

Whaaaaaaahh!!! Scary, scary, scary! Good for Kaylee, trying to fight back and not giving up! I just hate to think of what's happening to her, and what she'll go through when the adrenaline wears off. Brett? Well, he just needs to die. I'm sure Jayne will take care of that, or, better yet, take care of Kaylee when she takes care of that.

Hurry, Jayne!

Um, you are going to write more soon, and not leave us all hanging, right? (no pun intended.) (well, maybe a small one.) (groan)

Thank you for the Happy Birthday!

Kaylee has been so brave - I'm sorry you were scared. *pets* I think there's going to be problems ahead for both our friends...

I won't leave you hanging too long I hope - maybe the end of the week?

Ooohhh boy. Jayne is going to be right royally mad about this. Nobody, but nobody tortures his girl. I can't even begin to imagine what Kaylee must be feeling and thinking right now. And Jayne? He won't be thinking when he finds them.

Jayne's gonna do exactly what it says in my icon. Brett Willock is already dead. He just doesn't know it yet. That man is creepy. Very, very creepy.

OMG! You hurt Kaylee! Well, Brett did. Oh, please let him die a horrible death! (I'm not a violent person, but this is Kaylee!) I'm almost scared to see what Jayne is going to do - he's going to be beyond fury that Kaylee got hurt! I don't know how I'm going to get through till tomorrow to see what happens next (tomorrow, nice and early, right?)

Hurting Kaylee just isn't good that's for sure and Jayne's not going to be happy or thinking too clear.
