He was kissin’ her! Kaylee moaned in delight and wrigglin’ closer enthusiastically rubbed her tongue against his. Their tongues flirted and tousled as Jayne pulled her even nearer, liftin’ her off the ground. She clutched his shoulders and wrapped her legs around his back, nestlin’ his erection between her thighs.
Jayne growled into her mouth and guided her till her bottom rested on the porch railin’ and pressed even closer. He hooked his fingers into the buttons on her shirt and tugged. Buttons flew everywhere as his fingers moved to her breast, carressin’ and strokin’. Kaylee gasped and slid her hands under his shirt movin’ across the hard planes of his chest and down to his waist. Impatiently she started fumblin’ with his zip.
“Kaylee,” Jayne pulled away with a groan. “Gotta go,” he leaned his forehead against hers, neither of them speakin’ as they tried to catch their breath.
Kaylee nodded. They needed the food and medicine and Daddy was so anxious ‘bout the rest of the family. The Captain would be wantin’ to know what was goin’ on to. She knew, none better, that Jayne could look after himself, but she worried about him anyway. Reachin’ up she rubbed her hand against his cheek. “Ya’ll be careful, won’t ya?”
“I’m always careful,” he grinned at her snort and carefully lifted her to the ground. “Ya remember what I told ya.”
“Yes sir,” she answered smartly, tickin’ things off on her fingers. “Listen for the warnin’, feed the horses, don’t go nowhere without the gun (she wrinkled her nose at that), check the traps if necessary, behave myself. Did I miss anythin’?”
“Lots,” he growled and surprised her by pressin’ a quick hard kiss on her lips before turnin’ to go.
***************
Kaylee stood on the porch and watched till Jayne was out of sight. She could still taste him on her lips, still couldn’t believe that he’d kissed her back…
They were getting’ too close, too comfortable with each other. She hadn’t expected that to happen, she didn’t know that she’d like havin’ Jayne around so much.
‘Course he’d always been there on Serenity and they mostly got on good, but here there was no-one except Daddy and Jayne was still companionable. They disagreed ‘bout things naturally, she sometimes thought the man didn’t have an agreeable bone in his body, but he also teased and laughed with her and listened to what she had to say.
He was companionable in bed too and it weren’t just the great sexin’ they were havin’ that made him so and that surprised her.
Sometimes when they were both so tired, Jayne would just cuddle her close and go to sleep. It was sorta astonishing how much big, tough Jayne liked cuddlin’ and how much she liked him cuddlin’ her.
She’d gotten used to his solid presence in the room and in bed. He was heavy, even when he was trying not to be, took up more than his share of space, was grumpy in the mornings, touchy and suspicious – she missed him already. Sighing Kaylee went over to the horses; the more she kept busy the sooner Jayne would be back
***************
Jayne strode off quickly, steeling himself not to look back. He was achin’ and hot and could still taste Kaylee on his lips. He woulda resisted, stopped her as soon as she got too close, but for the gentle hand on his neck and the trouble in her eyes.
He couldn’t remember the last time he’d kissed anyone one like that and it was disturbin’ how much he’d liked it. The girl was wormin’ her way into his thoughts too often and when she’d pressed her lips to his he’d given into temptation and kissed her back.
They were gettin’ too close, too comfortable with each other. He’d thought it before and had even tried to draw away. But that hadn’t lasted; he never could deny Kaylee anythin’. Soon as she cuddled up to him in bed, the few thoughts he had flew straight out of his brain. It surprised him some how much he liked havin’ her there, even when they weren’t sexin’.
He’d got sorta used to her shiny presence in the room and in bed. She cuddled up to him all the time, smiled too much was carin’ and lovin. She was too good for the likes of him.
***************
Lou Anne whistled quietly as she worked. The sewin’ machine was needin’ a lot of coaxin’ today. She wished Mr Frye or Kaylee were here so she could get it fixed. This passive resistance thing was gettin’ old and she wasn’t sure it was workin’ anymore either.
This mornin’ there’d been more men around than usual and folks were gettin’ nervous. She was hopin’ the Captain or Zoë would be here soon so she could talk to them ‘bout it.
The crew from Serenity had been real good to her and all the folks around. She could see why Kaylee liked flyin’ with them.
“Lou Anne Trent?” the voice interrupted her thoughts and she looked round and gasped at the men loomin’ in the doorway.
They were a lot tougher than Dave and his friends; these were all wearin’ guns and mean expressions. It was makin’ her downright uneasy. Particularly since for the first time since that meeting in the street no-one from Serenity was nearby.
“That’s me,” she agreed cheerfully. “Can I help ya with somethin’?”
“We’d like ya to come down to the Sheriff’s office with us,” the leader answered.
“Why?”
“’Cause we say so,” he took a step closer, hand on his gun.
“And who might we be?”
Lou Anne turned with relief to see The Captain and Zoe standin’ at the back door. “Captain! They want me to go down to the Sheriff’s office and won’t say why.”
“Any of you fellas deputies?”
“Nope, just concerned citizens and Miss Lou Anne here she’s been stirrin’ up trouble.”
“Not that we’ve seen.”
“Are ya callin’ me a liar?” the man’s hand hovered over his gun.
“That I am,” Mal said pulling his gun and firing.
Lou Anne was jerked out of the way as the man fell to the ground and she heard Zoë fire her weapon. The sound of shots was deafening in the shop and when silence fell she raised her head cautiously to find thankfully, her friends from Serenity still standing.
*********************
“It’s fortunate you arrived when you did.” The Shepherd remarked watching Lily hug the girl. “I wonder what they planned to charge Miss Lou Anne with?”
“I think they’re past that. Taking her was a power play. One we messed up.”
“You think they’ll come out here?” the Shepherd questioned.
“With her here and now that we’ve actually shot someone I think they will.” Mal confirmed. “It might not be today or tomorrow, but they’ll be here.”
“We’ve got the place pretty well fortified sir. It won’t be easy for them.”
“Maybe not, but we not exactly overburdened with fighting folk here.” Though he knew the Fryes could shoot, they’d never actually fired at a living person and he didn’t know how they’d cope in an actual fight. If Jayne was here that would make all the difference. The things that man could do with a gun were downright magical sometimes.
“Who needs fightin’ folk?” the voice from the doorway startled them all.
“Jayne,” the Captain was more than surprised to see the mercenary he was just thinking about. “What are you doing here and how come the perimeter alarms didn’t go off?”
“’Ceptin’ for rabbits we’re nearly outta supplies. Kaylee needs more smoothers and such too.”
“And the alarms?”
“I knew you’d have some out Mal I ain’t stupid. Just avoided them is all.”
“How are Jack and Kaylee?” Lily butted in, her anxiety for her family overridin’ her fear of the mercenary.
“They’re fine. I got some letters for ya.” He handed them to her and turned back to Mal. “I don’t wanna leave them too long though.”
“No,” Mal agreed. “According to reports, the Sheriff’s getting serious again ‘bout hunting you all. The hiding place as good as they say?”
“It’s good, got water and everythin’. But if they search real serious and got a good tracker,” he shrugged, “they might find us.”
“What else?”
“I just don’t trust that Sheriff guy he’s got it in for Kaylee.”
“Brett?” Lily asked.” “Are ya sure? He and Kaylee were real interested in each other once. He even sent her an engine as a gift. I know things didn’t work out between them. But Kaylee’s never on bad terms with fellas she breaks up with.”
“Kaylee weren’t on bad terms, it’s him.” Jayne thought Mal should know which way the wind lay. “When we were in his office he was lookin’ at her like she owed him somethin’, you know the way?”
Yes Mal did know that look, knew it well and didn’t like to think of it directed at Kaylee. Jayne might be slow about noticing most things, but not folks’ reactions to each other.
“I hear tell they got a for real tracker out looking for you this time,” he warned.
“Kaylee set up an alarm, ain’t no-one gettin’ past that without us hearin’.” Jayne answered, “and I found us a bolt hole ifen we need it.”
“Good,” Mal glanced at Lily. “I’ll come with you to get the supplies and you can tell me all about it.”
***************
Jack studied his daughter closely. Kaylee had helped with his exercises, cleaned all the dishes, fixed the broken window and was now fiddlin’ with the solar generator. “Ya alright bao bei? Ya seem a mite jumpy.”
“Just keepin’ myself busy,” his daughter grinned at him. “Ya know I like to be doin’ things.”
Jack did know; his little girl was always that way. But somethin’ else was gettin’ to her right now. He hadn’t missed Kaylee’s down-in-the-mouth expression yesterday after Jayne left or the anxious glances she was now shootin’ toward the canyon entrance.
“Ya wouldn’t be missin’ Jayne then?”
“Maybe a little,” Kaylee admitted. She was so worried ‘bout him and she’d missed him last night somethin’ fierce.
“Ya gonna tell me anytime soon, ‘bout ya and him?”
“There ain’t anythin’ to tell Daddy.” Kaylee smiled, “Jayne and me are just friends helpin’ each other out, no strings. Once we go back to Serenity, we’ll go back to the way we were before.”
Jack looked at her thoughtfully, “Does that stand for both of ya?”
“Yeah Daddy, we agreed at the beginning it were just for now.”
“Why just for now?” Jack didn’t quite understand, “are ya seein’ someone else, still crushin’ on the doctor?”
“No,” Kaylee shrugged. “I ain’t seein’ anyone else and me and Simon aren’t ever gonna get together. Jayne’s safe, he’s same as me, likes sex and all. He just doesn’t like permanence and at the moment that suits me.”
“Hmmmm,” Jack was non-committal. He was pretty certain his girl cared a lot more for Jayne than she was admittin’. Maybe this deal they had goin’ blinded her? “Alright bao bei, but just remember sex between friends can change things and if ya wanna talk I’m right here.”
“I’ll remember Daddy,” she hugged his neck and kissed him. “Now I gotta leave ya for a bit while I go check the traps.”
“Are ya sure ya should?”
“Ya know Jayne’s got a timetable for that. We agreed that if he ain’t back in time I have to go check.”
They’d had a good talk ‘bout what would happen while Jayne was gone and he’d left her plenty of instructions.
“If I ain’t back by lunchtime tomorrow, yer gonna have to check the traps.” Jayne didn’t like the thought of that, but it was necessary. His snares might go unnoticed if they were empty, but if they were holdin’ dead animals, it was a given that someone nearby was trappin’ them. Any decent tracker would go lookin’.
“I’ll be alright.” Kaylee frowned at the worry in his voice. “Ya showed me where they are and it ain’t like I haven’t checked traps before.”
“This time’s different girl, there’s folks out there wantin’ to catch, maybe kill ya.” Jayne snapped at her, “and this time I ain’t gonna be with ya. Ya gotta check before goin’ out. Trust yer instincts. If yer feel scared or worried, even if there’s no-one there, don’t go out. Come back here and get yer Daddy and hole up where I showed ya. Dong ma?”
“Well if yer goin’ ya better take the gun,” her father interrupted her thoughts.
“Yeah, I know,” Kaylee sighed and picked up the gun
As well as her fighting lessons, Jayne had been teachin’ her more about guns. Instead of just thrustin’ a gun at her and expectin’ her to shoot, he’d taken it slowly bit by bit. They’d had target practice every day and she was gettin’ real accurate. Both of them knew she weren’t likely to actually shoot a person, but knowin’ she could defend herself relieved Jayne and made her more confident.
“I’ll be fine Daddy,” she grinned at him. “I’ll be back in an hour then its rabbit stew for dinner.”
***************
Kaylee paused at the entrance and took a careful look around before venturin’ out of the valley. Relieved to find no-one within sight she moved out quickly and headed toward the traps, coverin’ her tracks as she went.
Havin’ been there with Jayne it didn’t take her long to check all the snares. She found four rabbits and was ready to go back when she heard the sound of hooves. Divin’ for cover quickly, she held her breath and kept her head down while the riders went past.
Head down and heart beatin’ she waited for what seemed hours till she was sure the danger was gone. Cautiously she raised her head and studied the area all around, and thankful to find no-one within sight stood up and started back the way she had come.
***************
Jayne lay on the ground watchin’ while the bad guys rode by. Mal was right ‘bout the Sheriff gettin’ serious ‘bout searchin’ for them. This was the third time he’d had to hide and he was gettin’ frustrated. All the hidin’ was takin’ up too much time and he was later than he wanted to be.
Finally the searchers moved on and he could too. He had to move slow though and check his trail constantly, makin’ sure no-one could follow it and find him and the others. Before he got to the canyon entrance he did a careful sweep of the area and was happy to find no sign of anyone bein’ there. Now he could head straight for the cabin and some of Kaylee’s cookin’. He was starvin’ and with the fresh food he was carryin’ he knew the girl would cook somethin’ mouth-waterin’.
Movin’ quickly through the passageway he stopped short and frowned when he saw the cabin. Doors and windows were closed; no smoke was comin’ from the chimney. Somethin’ was wrong.
Drawin’ his gun and approachin’ more cautiously Jayne spied the barrel of a rifle protrudin’ from the front window. “Jack?” he whispered.
“Jayne,” the door opened slowly, rifle comin’ first and Jack followin’.
Jayne looked behind him into the dark house, “where’s Kaylee?” he asked.

Date: 2007-01-14 03:23 pm (UTC)I hope they don't catch Kaylee - although, if they do it'll be a great plot device to have Jayne's feelings for her come even more out in the open as he goes to get her back. I was so pleased to see another chapter as well as the kissing.... *sigh*
LOL at the sex conversation between Kaylee and her dad. Most of us would rather die than discuss our love lives with parents, but she's not shy at all.

2. Kaylee missing Jayne (I want Jayne cuddles too!*pouts*)
3. Jayne easily bypassing Mal's alarms ("I ain't stupid". *snort*)
4. See entry #1.
There's much more going on between those two than they're willing to admit right now. But if Kaylee's been taken, then it's not going to be long before it's obvious to more people than just Jack. 'Cause we all know how Jayne gets when Kaylee's hurt or in trouble.
