“I wouldn’t ask Inara, but I don’t know what else to do. You have contacts in places I don’t.” The woman on the screen frowned. “I don’t wish for people to think I’m unreliable. But if news of this leaks out, that’s just what they will think.”
“These things happen Ria,” Inara reassured her friend. “But I agree it would be best to be discreet. Perhaps I can retrieve the statue with no-one being the wiser.”
“If you could, that would be wonderful. I would provide financial recompense to whoever assisted you.”
“Leave it with me and I’ll see what I can do.” Inara signed off and turned from the Cortex with a sigh. For her idea to work she needed a mechanical genius, that would be no problem, and an expert pool player, therein lay her problem. For both pool players she knew, discretion would be an effort.

“Ya want me to wear a suit? To play pool in?” Jayne’s voice was incredulous.
Spurred on by the thought of the offered reward, the mercenary had been surprisingly co-operative up till now.
“It’s an exclusive club Jayne. You have to look the part.” Inara smiled at him persuasively, “exhibition players always wear black suits.”
“I’m wearin’ mine,” Kaylee chimed in. “The material’s so soft and comfortable.”
They both turned to look at her and Inara was surprised at the small smile that softened Jayne’s features.
“Ya look mighty fine in it too, little girl,” he grinned at her. “Almost look like a real pool player too.”
“I am a real pool player.” Kaylee was indignant, “I’m near on as good as ya, and better than most. And I’ll be a good distraction too.”
Jayne scowled. “Don’t ya be lettin’ them get too close.” Inara heard the genuine concern in his voice and wondered why she hadn’t noticed the man’s interest in Kaylee before.
“I can look after myself.” Kaylee grinned at him. “I’ve been shruggin’ off hands for a long time now.”

“How come we get stuck back here?” Brad complained.
“Just lucky I guess,” Tim replied.
“Jeff said one of the players is a girl. Fills out her suit real good he reckons. I’d rather be lookin’ at that than standin’ here.”
Hearing footsteps Tim looked down the hallway. “We might get a chance to see after all,” he nodded at the girl walkin’ toward them.
“Hi fellas!” Kaylee smiled brightly at the guards standin’ in front of her objective.
“What ya doin’ here little girl?” Brad leered at her.
“I got sick of standin’ round, thought I’d explore some.” Kaylee fluttered her eyelashes and smiled at them.
“How come yer standin’ round, ya finished the game already?”
“My partner’s real good, it doesn’t take long and then I get bored.”
“We can help with the boredom,” Tim grasped hold of her arm with a painful grip and pulled her up against his body.
“Kaylee,” Jayne’s voice intruded right on time. “Kaylee we got another game…” He came into the hallway and frowned at the sight in front of him.
Kaylee loved Jayne’s frowns, they said so much without him sayin’ anythin’. Right now the frown was tellin’ the fella to let her go – and he did; steppin’ back quickly. Relieved she moved toward him and stood as close as she could get to him.
“Wait a minute,” Jayne glanced down at her. “These fellas been botherin’ ya?” His blue eyes swept comprehensively over the men who took a joint step back.
“I didn’t even kiss her!” Tim backed further away.
“We don’t want no trouble,” Brad added. “The girl looked lonely is all.”
“No girl of mine is lonely.” Jayne wrapped an arm around Kaylee’s shoulders, bringin’ him closer to the guards. “I keep ‘em too busy.”
The men grinned at each other and leered at him and Kaylee. Jayne grinned back and pushing Kaylee behind him lashed out with his other hand knockin’ one into the wall and elbowin’ the other in the face.

“It’s the most ugly ass thing I ever saw.” Jayne looked at the vase in horror. “Kaylee and I risked out lives for that?”
“The vase is an ancient artefact Jayne.”
“So does that mean it has to be so gorramn ugly?”
“Bein’ ugly doesn’t matter as long as we get paid.” Kaylee giggled when they both turned to look at her in surprise.
“I think you’ve been around Jayne too long mei mei.” Inara chuckled, “you sound just like him.”
“That’s not such a bad thing,” Jayne protested.
“No it ain’t,” Kaylee put her head on his shoulder. “I could stand it for a bit longer.”
