If River was very quiet and pressed her ear tightly to the metal wall of her room, she could hear Serenity’s engine humming happily; and if she concentrated hard enough she could hear more than just the ship.
It had always been so, from the first moment she came aboard. At first only aware of the engine and its constant hum, she quickly became accustomed to the counterpoint. Twining in and around, without and within, the human element of the ship complimented it.
The heart of the ship’s engine gave her security. It offered her comfort, brought her some modicum of peace. As did the thoughts and emotions that swirled and eddied about her, even the most confusing proving to her she was there, human, alive.
She was alive, but not alive. Present but not. Fragmented, confused - broken; she needed a whole.
It was long till she found it, but Serenity was there, the counterpoint too. Bolstering and holding her, assisting them to realisation…
“Girl?” his voice a sleepy growl, Jayne reached out to her. “Come down here.”
River sighed happily and lay her head against his chest, ear pressed tightly to his skin.
She could hear the engine humming happily as Jayne’s arms encircled her, his heart thumping and his breath surrounding her. Serenity and the others were counterpoint to their whole as he held her fragments together, demanded her presence. River was human, alive - at peace.
