The two weeks they had originally set was almost over and no-one had heard a word about her family. If only she knew they were alright, were safe. That would be somethin’. Despite the crews’ reassurances, she was still concerned about Jayne’s presence with Jack and Kaylee. Lily worried quietly as she and Inara tidied up Kaylee’s bunk area.

The pretty dress, rugs and hangings were so Kaylee, the cheerful clutter drew the eye and made you feel comfortable and at home. It was such a contrast to Jayne’s bunk which she had also helped with. His had a lack of just ‘bout everythin’. No rugs, no hangings, just an empty rack which had apparently held the man’s weapons. There seemed to be an awful lot of space there.

Seeing her sideways glance at the space, Inara remarked “Jayne makes his living from those weapons, he loves them as much as Kaylee does Serenity.”

“He must be uncomfortable to be around.” Lily recalled the big man’s casual catalogue of Jack’s injuries. Thinking about those injuries she was becomin’ more and more worried.

“Not really,” Inara knew Lily was worried about Jayne looking after Kaylee and Jack. “He’s surly I admit and often crude and violent, but Jayne’s good at his job. Though he’d never say so,” the Companion smiled, “he’s fond of Kaylee and not inclined to let anyone hurt her.”

“Kaylee said he saved her life?” Lily questioned; not quite believing it.

“Yes he did,” Inara confirmed. “He got shot in the back protecting her.” She had a sneaking suspicion that, though he didn’t know it, Jayne’s feelings for Kaylee were much more than just as a protective older brother. She was just about to say so when the Captain descended the ladder.

“Mal,” Lily greeted. “Have you heard anythin’ of Kaylee and Jack?”

“No,” the Captain answered. “But no news is good news, so they say.”

Truth was, things were getting’ a bit worryin’. In the last little while, as both Mal and the Shepherd had predicted, things had escalated in town. But instead of folks just sittin’ by, lettin’ the Sheriff and Foreman ride roughshod over them, they were fightin’ back. It’d been what Book called ‘passive resistance’, but the crew from Serenity were kept busy protecting them and deferring problems.

In lots of ways it was better that neither Jack nor Kaylee were here. They were safer outta trouble; she just wished she knew how they were doin’.

“And then the Captain made us leave the ship…” Kaylee was deep into her story, Jack hangin’ on every word. He had had no notion of some of the things his daughter had experienced, it worried him some. She’d grown up more than he’d expected. Her matter-of-fact acceptance of this situation showed how much she had changed.

When Kaylee had wanted to go with Serenity he hadn’t argued any. He knew she had to be going places that weren’t home and figured that being the mechanic would keep her out of harms way much of the time. But apparently not, Jack thought, recallin’ her words to Jayne a few days earlier; had any of the violence happened directly to her?

“Ya said ya were tied up, held hostage? Ya never told us any of that in yer letters.”

“I know Daddy,” Kaylee cuddled up against his shoulder. “It just didn’t seem right worryin’ ya and Mama when it were already over. I got looked after alright.”

“’Spose I can’t talk. Ya must’ve got a shock when Ben told ya ‘bout Steve.” Jack’s expression was sorrowful. “I’m sorry ‘bout that bao bei, it shoulda been a family member that told ya. But they were watchin’ me and I didn’t want anyone else getting’ hurt cause of me.”

“It weren’t yer fault Daddy and Mr Amos did alright tellin’ me.”

Jack wasn’t comforted, he was feelin’ mighty guilty ‘bout all sorts of things. “If I hadn’t been so loud mouthed in the first place, Steve would still be with us and ya wouldn’t be hiding here and in danger.”

Kaylee hugged him gently. It was the first time Daddy had said anything bout her brother or anythin’ else that had happened. “Ya did what ya thought was right and from what Mama says so did Steve.” Tears shone in her eyes, “Ya two wouldn’t be Daddy and Steve if ya didn’t do what’s right. Ya know he was always fightin’ for folks rights. Remember the time he argued with Mr Howard ‘bout the town taxes?”

Jack nodded and smiled slightly, “and I remember his little sister standin’ right beside him.” Despite the big age gap, those two had always been in the thick of things.

“I miss him Daddy and I feel so bad,” Kaylee’s lips trembled. “And I haven’t even visited his grave.”

“I know xin gan,” Jack hugged her back, tears in his eyes too. “When we get back, we’ll go visit him together and ya can tell him all yer stories.”

Jack looked up and shook his head as Jayne, drawn by some sort of sixth sense related to his daughter, walked out from the kitchen and cast a questionin’ glance at Kaylee cryin’ in his arms.

*******************

Jayne wanted to know what was troublin’ Kaylee. She didn’t cry often but when she did he got all sorts of squirrely feelins inside and wanted to reach out for her. He figured that since her daddy was all teary too they were probably talkin’ bout the dead brother. He could safely leave Jack to cope with the tears and cuddlin’ and wouldn’t have to get too close to Kaylee.

Sighin’ Jayne went out to check on the horses. He’d found them wanderin’, still saddled, sore and sorry one day when he was out checkin’ the rabbit snares. They’d been glad to see a human person and come to him readily. He thought the horses might come in handy if Mal couldn’t come get him and his charges. Jack could ride one and not slow them down. Kaylee could ride the other.

‘Course the girl had taken to the horses straight away and they liked her too. What creature wouldn’t? There wasn’t a day went by when she weren’t out there pattin’ and fussin’ over them. She did the same with Jack, lookin’ after him so good it made Jayne want to be just a little bit hurt. Just so’s he could get some of that lovin’.

He pushed that thought away real quick when Kaylee came up and leant over the rail. “Ya alright?”

Kaylee swiped her sleeve across her nose and nodded all solemn like. “Jayne it’s been near on two weeks and we’re runnin’ out of smoothers and ‘cept for the rabbits, there ain’t much food left neither.”

Jayne had noticed and truth be told, he’d been expecting Mal for the last couple of days. That he or someone else hadn’t come worried Jayne more than he wanted to admit. The Captain had probably got everyone into some sorta trouble.

“Jack ain’t up to travellin’ fast and ya and he can’t be goin’ down there till we find out what’s happenin’.” Jayne frowned. Leavin’ Kaylee here with her father felt all kinds of wrong. The man was nowhere near well enough to give a good account of himself in a fight.

“I think ya should go by yerself, it’d be quicker and the Captain might be needin’ ya.” Kaylee smiled at him in reassurance. “Ya won’t be gone that long, we’ll be fine. Unless ya think I can’t look after Daddy and myself?” She glared at him, hands on hips.

“I didn’t say that now did I?” Jayne retorted, “The bad guys are still out there remember.”

“I’ll be careful. I promise.”

*******************

“Why is my town full of unrest?” Their employer glared coldly. “I wanted the people cowed and obedient.”

“They’re not sayin’ things like Jack and Steven Frye were,” Douglas explained. “They’re just goin’ on with their regular lives and aren’t doin’ anythin’ we can fine or arrest them for.”

“We aren’t having much success intimidating them either.” Brett complained, “Whenever we try something, someone from Serenity appears and bolsters their courage.”

“Well I’m tired of it. If intimidation isn’t working, you’ll have to resort to outright violence. Douglas,” he turned to the foreman. “Arrest the Trent girl. People will fight for her and get beaten back. Willock take some of the men and the best tracker and find Frye and the others. Parade them through town, and then we’ll hang them.”

*******************

“Sounds like a good idea,” Jack nodded. He was all kinds of concerned ‘bout the folks at home and was anxious to find out what was happening. “I’d like to write to Lily, to reassure her some.”

“Good idea,” Kaylee nodded enthusiastically. “Mama will be so worried ‘bout you.”

“Ya better write too,” Jayne shoved a piece of paper in front of her. “Let yer Mama know I ain’t killed ya yet.”

“She doesn’t really think that Jayne.”

“Yeah she does girl,” Jayne stalked out, intent on gettin’ organised for leavin’.

“What was all that about?” Jack enquired.

“Mama was real nervous round Jayne,” Kaylee sighed. “He tried hard too, behaved himself and all, but Mr Amos was there doubtin’ him and Mama listened. She didn’t want him comin’ with us, didn’t trust him.”

“Ya trust him though?” Jack questioned.

“’Course I do Daddy and so does the Captain mostly.”

*******************

Kaylee woke to the sensation of tongue and lips caressin’ her skin. “Mornin’.” She smiled lazily at Jayne as he looked up.

“Mornin’,” he replied and went back to his self-appointed task.

Kaylee stretched and sighed as rough tongue, soft lips and whiskers trailed over her stomach stoppin’ to explore her belly button and makin’ her giggle. Her giggles turned to moans as Jayne moved lower to her welcomin’ nethers. It was a slow, delicious wake-up call and one she was enjoyin’ a lot. The slow strokes of Jayne’s tongue invadin’ her made Kaylee forget for a moment that he was leavin’ today.

Strong, strokin’ fingers joined his tongue and forgettin’ everythin’ expect the sensations surrounding her Kaylee clung to Jayne as she arched her body closer and started shudderin’ in delight.

*******************

Tryin’ to hide her worry for him, Kaylee followed Jayne out to the porch and handed him a package of food. She was still sorta wobbly-kneed from the great sexin’ earlier. Jayne had sure been showin’ her a good time, the best sexin’ she’d ever had, but she missed the kissin’ on the mouth.

She knew why Jayne didn’t do it of course. It weren’t only the goodnight kiss – it was the closeness. Kissin’ meant caring and he was mostly determined not to do that. Kissin’ meant carin’ to her too, but sex and kissing just went together. Jayne was pretty exciting with his mouth other places, she’d bet money he could kiss on the lips.

Since he was going away and she was so worried Kaylee reached up, tucked a confiding hand round his neck and planted a kiss on those beckoning lips. Expectin’ him to pull back or move away completely, Kaylee was confounded when Jayne wrapped his arms round her pulled her flat against his chest and thrust his tongue against hers in a bone melting kiss.
