Notes from a disordered mind....
Nov. 13th, 2006 12:01 pmWe're back from the child's long awaited weekend at the Surf Lifesaving Branch Titles in Bowen. In seems like an awfully long weekend...
We had a good weekend except for some minor problems. I drove the four hour drive on Friday so I wouldn’t have to get up and leave home at four in the morning, not my favourite thing.
We had a great time stopping at all the fruit stalls, buying all the in season fruit and buying bananas that weren’t $12.99 a kilo. I stopped at the local library for a chat and a tour – which means I can write off the mileage and petrol on my tax…
Our Motel was pretty nice. The club books en masse and we got one of the refurbished rooms and had a microwave and all. http://www.whitsundaysandsresort.com/ The little guy was impressed with the scrub turkeys and bush walk and the fact that there was a cove right at the back of our room. We even saw a turtle swimming there. The child woke up at 5.00am and we had to go exploring - but I survived.
My minor problem occurred at home with the dog! He’s an escape artist and after he escaped for possibly the millionth time on Wednesday I decided he’d have to go on a running lead. The guy who was supposed to fix it for me on Friday came and let the dog off his chain instead. Then the dumb dog tried to jump my neighbours’ 6 foot fence and broke his leg!! Lucky for me my other neighbours heard him and came to the rescue. Also lucky for me my friends could go out on Saturday and take the poor dog to the vet…The vet says that the leg isn’t broken, which would apparently be better, instead all the ligaments in the dog’s leg are torn. They have to be in immobilised in a cast for 2 months. I haven’t got the bill yet *groan*, but can just imagine it! Two nights at the vets, an xray, painkillers and cast…Fortunately I’ve got pet insurance and I’ll get the money back, but not before I go away, I’ll bet. I’m tempted to make the handyman guy pay, since he let the dog off in the first place.
On Saturday it turned out all the younger members events were all on Sunday, much to everyone’s dismay. My little guy wasn’t too bent out of shape as it meant he could have a play in the stinger net and I got inveigled into being an official for the day!
It was meant to be filling in for someone for a couple of hours but ended up my being on the beach for seven hours!! I had three-quarter length trousers, borrowed a long-sleeved shirt, turned up the collar, plastered the zinc all over my face and wore a hat and this still happened (I was going to show you my spectacular sunburn in the gap between the trousers and shoes and socks, but the camera won’t download or something, so you’re spared). We had the two minutes silence at 11.00am and I was very impressed that the carnival was stopped and everyone out on the water came in to stand on the sand. It's good to see the sacrifices of our serviceman past and present...
Sunday was the big day for us; we had to be at the beach by 7.00 am. Most of the little guys had about 11 events and we hardly moved off the sand for 6 hours. My little guy had a wonderful day and did well. He made under 9 age champion again, with three firsts, a second and a fifth in the individual competition. They all did well in the relays too and were totally exhausted for the four hour trip home. They'll be proud photos later so be prepared to run screaming!
With the Branch titles over and only one major school event left before we leave, I can now concentrate on our holiday…It’s only 13 days till we leave for the States!
The child’s passport, the problematic one, has arrived. My passport, the straight-forward one hasn’t. If it doesn’t turn up today I have to ring the passport office. Since it’s next to impossible to talk to an actual human there you may have to listen to some ranting about bureaucracy…
I was going to say lots of fic related things too – but shall spare you until later! *evil laugh*

Date: 2006-11-13 03:07 am (UTC)You have pet insurance? *mind boggles*
Yay for the child doing well! Sorry about the sunburn. Now you know how I felt this summer (I still have a line across my ankles where I got burnt!)
Get that passport! And I'm looking forward to pics of the child. And maybe one of the cast?

Date: 2006-11-13 03:33 am (UTC)I have pet insurance cause my last dog had thousand dollar legs and they offered it with my contents insurance. For an extra $45 a year, I'm covered for everything except the regulation shots.
Hopefully pics before I leave. I have to wait for the club photographer to show us all his shots. And *giggle* I'll take one of the cast and very sorry dog too!!

Date: 2006-11-13 03:38 am (UTC)And wow, I don't think you could get pet insurance here for $45 a month!
We must discuss your trip soon, I think I will email you.

Date: 2006-11-13 08:13 am (UTC)And $12.99 is cheap of bananas. We have 'em down here for $15.
Sounds like the child did well, he's got more pluck than me at his age.
I'm astounded that your trip is so close! Feels like it was only yesterday that you first started talking about it.

Date: 2006-11-13 10:19 am (UTC)Ouch! Poor you and your sunburn. I've got very fair skin myself, so I try to avoid sunlight altogether - which is pretty easy to do in Tassie.
Hope your passport turns up okay. Bureaucracy sucks.

Date: 2006-11-13 10:53 am (UTC)I'm amazed about the trip too! I still can't believe I'm going so soon.
The little guy is pretty brave and very determined, he's been practising madly.
