Kaylee steered the mule down the back streets as fast it could go. “Have we lost them?” she twisted round to see.
“Only the first lot,” Jayne answered sourly, watchin’ their rear. He’d got rid of the immediate threat, but there’d be more comin’ and the next bunch would be better prepared.
He and Kaylee had taken the group at the jail by surprise and they’d fired wildly. The way they wasted bullets made Jayne thankful that Kaylee was wearin’ her body armour. Her head was uncovered though and stray bullets were a real danger. The longer it took the bad guys to catch up to them, the better he’d like it.
“Go faster if ya can and keep yer head down.”
Kaylee nodded and accelerated. Now they were through the town and she didn’t have to worry so much ‘bout avoidin’ folks, she could make up time. “Is Daddy alright?”
“He’s fine.” Jayne replied, glancin’ at the man and gettin’ a thumbs up in reply. He climbed up to sit behind her for awhile, “hasn’t even shifted in the stretcher.”
**************************
“Do ya think it worked?” Lily’s hands shook as she washed up the dinner dishes. The waitin’ was agony and she wasn’t used to it.
Since Kaylee and the mercenary had left this mornin’ she’d done nothin’ but worry. The prospect of what might be happenin’ in town frightened her and the fact that no-one here knew what was occurin’ just made her antsy.
“We won’t know for sure till they contact us.” Zoe reminded her, “and that won’t be till this evening at the earliest.”
“’Course we’ll have an inkling if the law comes searching,” the Captain put in.
“Searchin’?”
“If Kaylee and Jayne got away, here’ll be the first place they’re looked for.”
“Here and Serenity.” The Shepherd added. “Everyone best be prepared to stand by while your belongings are thrown around. Don’t object, no matter what.”
“Why would our things be thrown around?” asked Tom.
“Because it’s intimidating and frightening and makes people more amenable to answering questions.”
“A shepherd would know this how?” muttered Mal to him in aside.
“The Shepherd’s right, don’t stop them from doing anything. Look bewildered, a touch frightened, don’t admit knowing what Kaylee was up to or where they’ve gone.”
“Well that last part will be easy since none of us do know where they’ve gone,” Ben remarked.
Mal had intentionally not told anyone but Jayne, Kaylee and Lily where they were going. In his opinion, the fewer people who knew, the better, especially when he wasn’t sure if he could trust some of them.
“Its better that way,” he reassured Kaylee’s former teacher. “And so’s knowing your enemy. What can ya tell me about the bad guys?”
**************************
They’d been travellin’ for upward of an hour before Jayne caught the sounds of pursuit behind them.
“They’re comin’ Kaylee,” he warned her. “Remember, don’t look back, and just concentrate on drivin’.”
Jayne clambered back to the trailer, takin’ another glance at Kaylee’s daddy on the way. Jack caught his eyes, pointin’ upwards to the sky. Jayne cursed and reached for Vera. “Hover mule.”
“Kaylee,” he shouted over the rushing wind and gunshots. “Stop dead on my say so.”
Measurin’ the distance between them and the flyin’ mule, Jayne watched with narrow eyes till it got real close. “Stop!” he shouted.
Kaylee stamped hard on the brake bringin’ the mule to a shuddering halt as the other vehicle overshot them. Raisin’ Vera, Jayne watched avidly as the driver of the mule struggled to turn. Takin’ careful sight he fired, and brought the mule and its passengers crashin’ to the ground.
“Go,” he ordered lookin’ back as their mule rocked off, satisfied that nobody was gonna walk away from that crash. That didn’t mean they were outta the woods though. ‘Cause here came some more bad guys.
Kaylee veered off the track and sent the mule bumpin’ over the landscape. The folks behind them followed, guns firin’. Jayne swore as bullets whizzed by and swingin’ the Callaghan round, shot back, bringin’ the pursuit to an abrupt halt.
But of course their luck couldn’t be that good, they’d start followin’ again he was real sure and now Jayne could feel a change in the steerin’, the mule was wobblin’ everywhere.
“Wheel’s gone!” Kaylee yelled over her shoulder, tryin’ desperately to keep the vehicle upright. She was losin’ the battle and the vehicle swayed unsteadily, further unbalanced by the trailer it was pulling.
Reachin’ forward Jayne snatched Kaylee off the seat, tucked his body round hers and jumped just as the mule lurched sideways. His shoulder hit the ground heavily and they rolled several times before comin’ to rest in a hollow.
“Jayne,” Kaylee peered anxiously down into his face. He was lyin’ on his back with her clasped tight to his body, he looked more winded that hurt, she decided. “Daddy…” she glanced back at the turned over mule and trailer.
“Go check,” Jayne groaned as she jumped up. Rollin’ over he slowly pushed himself to his feet and followed after her.
**************************
“Daddy?” his daughter’s whisper reached his ears.
“Here bao bei,” Jack couldn’t believe he had hardly moved in his stretcher. The mule and trailer had rolled over several times. Although his wounds still hurt like hell and the trailer was now turned upside down, he was still securely strapped in and immobile.
“We have to get ya outta this.” Kaylee’s shakin’ hands started undoin’ straps, but was interrupted by Jayne’s sudden appearance behind her.
“Ssh,” was all Jayne said as he gave Jack a warnin’ look and pulled Kaylee back into the shelter of his body. They stood still and silent, listenin’ to the sound of footsteps and voices that rose and fell around them for what seemed to Kaylee a very long time, before fadin’ into the distance.
Listenin’ closely, Jayne tracked the footsteps, markin’ the direction they were headin’. Loosenin’ his grip on Kaylee’s shoulders he muttered. “Wait here.”
She nodded reassuringly and watched till Jayne disappeared from view. Kaylee moved back to her father and gave him a strained smile. “We’ll just wait till Jayne gets back. Then he’ll help me get ya out.”
“Where’s he goin’?” Jack whispered. His daughter and the mercenary seemed to have some sort of wordless communication goin’ on.
“He’s gonna follow those folks and kill them.” Kaylee shivered. She knew it were necessary, that the bad guys would kill any of them without a thought. It didn’t mean she had to like it though.
“How’s he gonna find them?”
“It’s what Jayne does Daddy. He’s good at it too, got a sort of sixth sense when it comes to trackin’ folk. The Captain says he’s a natural at it; that and survivin’.”
“What if he doesn’t survive?” Jack asked. The mercenary was obviously good at his job, but there were still quite a few people out there, and he was only one man.
“’Course he will,” said Kaylee with shaky certainty. “He’ll be back soon.”
