Kaylee blinked tears out of her eyes for what seemed the hundredth time. She just wanted to be there, she was so worried about the people at home. How could her carin’ big brother be gone? How was her family coping without him? Thoughts spiralled through her brain and it felt like she couldn’t concentrate on anythin’.
In an attempt to keep herself busy, she was fixin’ everything on Serenity that needed fixin’. She’d fine tuned the engine to within an inch of its life. The mule was gonna run better than ever before, the cooler in the kitchen now made ice and at the moment she was wrestlin’ with the heat register in Jayne’s bunk. The thing had never worked right the whole time she’d been on board and it still weren’t workin’.
After more than an hour here, she still hadn’t solved the problem. Exasperated Kaylee threw the wrench across the room "dai yi".
“Don’t think it’s that bad girl,” Jayne’s large feet appeared in her vision. “Maybe ya just need a break.”
He was probably right Kaylee reflected as she tried to remember when she’d last slept. Sighin’ she slid out from under the bed and leanin’ against the bunk took a look around.
‘Cause she’d been in here before, but she’d never really noticed that Jayne’s bunk was Spartan. Apart from the rack full of well-cared for weapons and the precisely place girlie pictures, there was no decoration. His few possessions were stowed under the bed, fewer toiletries lined up on the shelf above the sink. There was no mat on the floor – it was cold.
“How can you keep the room so clean?”
Jayne grinned and sat down; knowin’ exactly what she meant. Kaylee’s room, the couple times he’d been in there, was a real contrast to his. It was sorta warm and sunshiny like her.
Fairy lights hung everywhere and there were all sorts of hangings decoratin’ the walls. In pride of place hung the pink dress she’d worn at the dance the captain took her to. Different kinds of rugs lay all over the floor, just where ya could trip over them and she’d wired a music system in above the bed.
“There was lots of us in a little house and I shared a room, sorta had to keep it neat.”
“Guess I was spoilt. My room was little, but all my own.” Kaylee unconsciously leant her head against the side of his leg, thoughts far away. “I came late; the boys were almost grown and took up the bedrooms so Mama made her sewin’ room into my sleepin’ place.”
“Nice.” Jayne grunted.
“Yeah,” Kaylee agreed. “When I was ten, Mama said I was old enough to decorate it myself. Boy did I have fun. Steve,” Kaylee hesitated. “Steve said I’d scare the fellas off if they ever came in my room.”
“Did ya?”
“Never took ‘em back there.” Kaylee shook her head. “It was more fun sneakin’ round.” She grinned at him, “and I guess I never met anyone I wanted to take back to my special place.”
Sorta like on the boat, Jayne reflected. Before she got all interested in the Doc, Kaylee had never bought her fellas back to Serenity. They always did their sexin’ some place else. It figured that she’d think of ‘her girl’ as a special place.

Ben Amos contemplated the crew as they sat round the dinner table. They were a diverse group; he mused and they were criminals!
He’d never associated with criminals before. While searching for Serenity he had heard more than a few stories about this crew. Jack had obviously censored his daughters’ letters when reading them aloud.
The doctor and his sister were some sort of fugitives wanted by the government. The Shepherd appeared very mysterious; the mercenary had warrants out on him; as did the Captain and his second in command. The only remotely normal people on board were Kaylee, the pilot and the companion.
He had no idea why Jack thought they could help, why he had faith in them. They certainly appeared willing enough to do so, but whether they would be any assistance at all, he didn’t know.
“How long you been gone from home?” The Captain interrupted his thoughts to question him yet again. It was very clear that the man didn’t trust him one iota.
“Six weeks now.” Ben answered.
“And another week to go,” Mal mused. “That’s a fair piece of time. Things might’ve changed since you left, gotten worse.”
“How much worse could it get?” Ben was startled at the comment.
“Unfortunately once folks start killing other folk, things usually get worse.”
“My family?” Kaylee pounced on the Captain’s words at once. “If Daddy was speakin’ out, they might get mad at him.”
“Well I’m hoping not, little Kaylee.” Mal moved uncomfortably under everyone’s glares. “Mr Amos said they’d gone out to your place and stayed there.”
“That’s right Kaylee.” Ben was keen to reassure the girl, “everyone went out there. Most of them are sleeping at your grandmother’s old house. Jack was planning on staying put till I got back.”
The big mercenary regarded him steadily. “How’d he know ya’d come back?”
“Jayne!” several voices yelled at once.
“What?” Jayne shrugged. “A man’s gotta look after his own skin ya know.”
“I trust Mr Amos.” Kaylee said indignantly.
“Ya trust everyone.” Jayne retorted.
“Stop,” the Captain ordered. “I don’t exactly trust Mr Amos here. But he is comin’ back with us, so for now we give him the benefit of the doubt.

Kaylee hovered uncertainly beside Zoe as they came in to land. As soon as the ramp was lowered, she was outta there and runnin’ towards the house. It was sorta comfortin’ to see everythin’ looked the same as always. Flowers out the front, vegetable garden at the side, paint on the walls all fresh looking.
Everyone had come out onto the porch and was looking toward Serenity and her.
“Mama!” Kaylee flung herself into her mother’s welcomin’ arms, sinkin’ for a moment into the familiar comfort. But somethin’ was different; her Mama’s body was shakin’ like she was cryin’? Kaylee pushed back from the embrace and studied the people around her.
There were lines around her Mama’s eyes that hadn’t been there before and she looked defeated. Defeated! Her Mama; the one who was always happy, always busy, never let anything get her down.
Kaylee glanced over her mothers’ shoulder. There was Mari, Steve’s widow with their little girl; Tom and his wife were there too and their kids, Aunt Clara and Uncle Brad…
“Where’s Daddy?” Kaylee asked.

Date: 2006-09-28 06:08 am (UTC)*throws plot bunny* Maybe he's just been taken prisoner or some such, so Jayne can go play hero? I loved him being the lone voice of dissent, too. That was great.
Looking forward to more.
