“Kaylee,” Jayne shook the girl’s shoulder gently. “We gotta get movin’.”
He’d stayed awake and watched her for what was left of the night. She hadn’t noticed he’d called her Piao liang nu at least.
He never called anyone by pet names, something Kaylee knew very well. Jayne frowned Didn’t know why he’d done it then.
No way did he want her noticin’ that he had, she’d be feelin’ sorry for him again, sure as shootin’. He didn’t want Kaylee pityin’ him, tryin’ to comfort him or somethin’. He’d settle for keepin’ their friendship. Jayne shook her again; this’d probably be the only way he’d get to touch her now, “Kaylee.”
“Jayne.” Kaylee blinked up at him sleepily and rested her head against his hand. “Jayne!” she sat up quickly and pulled away from him.
“Time to get up,” he managed to keep his voice even. “We’re gonna get us some milk and then get goin’.”

As dawn approached, Hatcher lay in the convenient shadow of the ship opposite Serenity, watchin’ and waitin’.
The response by Serenity’s crew had caught him by surprise and he’d barely made it to his emergency getaway. He’d never actually had to turn to his escape route before, but it had been the only way to escape the sharp shootin’ crew of the boat.
He’d warned Rich gorram Hessian that this crew was good, a hard target for sure, but
of course Rich hadn’t listened and the attack had gone ahead as planned.
Except the endin’ didn’t happen like they planned; his men were dead and the continued silence from within the ship told Hatcher all he needed to know. His brother and the other three men were goners.
He didn’t give a shit about the three guys; they were just thugs for hire. But his brother – he cared about him.
This was all Hessian’s fault. Vengeance had blinded him.
No doubt the liou coe shuai du biao-tze huh hoe-tze duh ur-tze was out chasin’ after Cobb and didn’t care what happened on Serenity. Well he was gonna care.
Hatcher took a last look at the boat and left, headin’ towards the outskirts of town. He was gonna find Hessian and they were gonna have a showdown.

“What I want to know – atchoo - is how in hell you got – atchoo - hold of Jayne’s weapons?” Mal had fastened on the one point Inara did not want to discuss.
“The bad guys did an emergency override.” Wash explained loudly, his ears still ringing. “Since the changes we made, that means all the doors on the ship open automatically.”
“Most fortunate,” the Shepherd remarked dryly for the Captain who was having difficulty with his sneezes. “You all appear to have conducted a very strong defence.”
“No touching guns.” River looked with wide eyes at the Captain and patted the kitten that had nestled into her hands.
“No mei mei. You did well.” Simon patted her on the back. “The anti-histamines will establish themselves soon Captain.”
“So did you Doctor.” Zoë noted. “With the guns I mean.”
“I don’t enjoy killing.”
“Well you haven’t done any yet son.” Book smiled at him in reassurance. “I’ve had a look at the bodies and at your guns. Vera’s bullet killed one and the other three fell to Inara.”
“Did you hear that lambie-toes? I killed one of the bad guys.”
“Very impressive…”
Mal interrupted before his second in command could start praising up her man. “We still – atchoo - have to find our missing mercenary and mechanic and I’m thinking we’d best start looking.”
“You think they’re still in danger?” Inara was worried.
“None of the dead guys look like Hanson’s description of this Rich fella.” Zoë replied. “So he’s probably still after Jayne.”
“And Kaylee’s with Jayne.” The Shepherd added, he was concerned about both of them. “What do you suggest Captain?”
“I want you staying here with our heroes Shepherd. In case the authorities actually come to check on us. Zoë and I are going out looking for our crew.”

“What are we goin’ to do?” Kaylee asked watchin’ Jayne squirt cow’s milk into a bowl he found.
“Circle round town. Try to get back to Serenity.” Jayne said. “Rich might try ‘n’ get me there. We gotta warn the Captain.”
Tellin’ Mal was gonna be a barrel of fun, he’d be furious with Jayne. Like as not the man would order him off the ship. He deserved it too, gettin’ Kaylee into trouble, causin’ problems for the others.
“None of this is yer fault.” Kaylee could tell what Jayne was thinkin’ and she knew what the Captain was like when there was a problem. “This Rich fella is comin’ after ya, not the other way round.”
“Wouldn’t be comin’ after me at all, cept for what I did to Stitch.” Jayne handed her the bowl of milk and a piece of protein bar he’d found in his pocket.
“Ya might’ve left him on that planet at first.” Kaylee countered, “but ya didn’t give him the gun or ask him to shoot yer friend with it.”
Kaylee drank half the milk thirstily and handed him back the bowl.
Jayne was thinkin’ badly of himself again. As if he couldn’t do anythin’ right. She wanted to cuddle up to him and explain that he weren’t as bad as he thought. But she couldn’t, she didn’t want him thinkin’ she was pushin’ him again.
Cause now in the light of day Kaylee knew she weren’t nothin’ like Jayne’s usual choices. She didn’t measure up, no way to those pictures on his wall, or to any of the women she’d seen him with. She was just plain Kaylee.
Kaylee never could see the bad in people, Jayne thought. Here she was bein’ chased all over creation for somethin’ that was his fault and did she blame him? No. The girl made excuses for him. It just showed that Kaylee was too soft-hearted, too open and honest, too beautiful for him.

“There’s two sets of tracks.” Bobby was sittin’ on his heels lookin’ at the ground. “They ain’t clear enough for me to tell which is ours. Our two could’ve gone either way.”
Rich surveyed the landscape below them. “I’d bet on the barn furthest away, it’s a long way from the homestead. Cobb hasn’t survived this long without learnin’ a thing or two. He’d never stay too close to a house.”
“If it is them I don’t think we should corner them in the barn.” Tom decided to give his opinion.
“Yeah,” Rich agreed. “Judgin’ from what your witnesses say, he’s a good close quarters fighter and we have no idea how capable the girl is. We’ll just hunker here and wait for them to come out. Don’t think it’ll be long. Cobb will want to get back to his ship.”
“There they are Rich.” Bobby interrupted, pointin’ excitedly to the figures that appeared in front of the barn below.
“Good.” Rich whispered. “Keep outta sight, wait till they’re well clear of the buildings, then we grab them.”

Glad you're hanging in there...there's quite a bit more to come.

Date: 2006-08-14 07:10 am (UTC)Poor Simon, though. Thought he'd actually killed someone and then told that he hadn't. I'm feeling sorry for Simon. I think I must be ill. Or tired. Or both. *laughs*
I'm liking that Jayne and Kaylee are having *after the sexin* doubts. But hell, that can't last for long! Can it? *is worried*
