I'm sure you all know of my abiding love for Firefly? Indeed I think it would be hard to miss :) And due to my icon posts and actual participation on the comms, I think my Magnificent7 flisters know I'm interested in that. But what other fandoms do we have in common? Old ones we don't talk about much anymore? Ones we think no-one else is interested in? Fandoms we lurk around, but never comment in? (I'm bad at that) Do you read the fan fic? Keep up with the news? Here's my partial list...I'd love to know yours.
Star Trek - in all its incarnations. Of course some series I liked more than others, but it's always been there. I used to read all the magazines and still read all the tie-ins. I read Star Trek fan fic back in the hand-written on paper days and have never looked at it online till the new movie.
Dr Who - Through every one of the Doctors. I've been watching this show since the B&W days and read fan fic in the old days and never since.
Blakes7 - oh how I loved that show. I watched every epsiode, tried to tape it the only time they replayed it. Bought the videos and subsequently the dvds. I read and own the couple of books related to it and actually subscribe to a couple of the online comms for this one, but fic has slowed to very small trickle.
X-files - another of my all-time favourites. But for some reason, with the exception of some Knowle Rohrer/Monica fic
ladytalon1 wrote, I've never read a word fan fiction.
Buffy the vampire slayer - Buffy arrived on the screen about the same time the Internet arrived at work (more or less), so you could say it was the start of my online addiction to fan fiction.
Angel - to a lesser extent than Buffy. I liked it the best in Season 5 when Spike and Marcus Hamilton (aka Adam Baldwin) were in it :) I'm more in the Marcus Hamilton fandom than anything else (there's not many of us) and wish I could finish my WIP concerning him.
Firefly - The reason I bought my own computer, started writing fan fic myself and the only show I've ever gone to a convention for. I own the comics, the dvds (in several incarnations), all the related books and am so fannish about this show! I even run a couple of LJ comms related to it.
Chuck - I watched initially for Adam Baldwin (as I do anything he's in), but I do enjoy the show itself and have even written a couple of fics for this one.
Magnificent Seven - I watched it when it was on, but re-discovered it when I bought the DVDs early last year. Straight away I searched for the fan fic and read and am still reading. I have some 1/2 written ideas for Mag7 fic and one day might even post them.
Merlin - it's new for me, but the little guy and I have been watching it. And despite the fact it's historically inaccurate, I've been enjoying it :) I remind myself that the whole story is a myth anyway and probably an amalgam of several centuries of folk lore *nods*. I've been lurking and reading the fan fic for a couple of weeks now.
Of course there's lots of other shows that temporarily catch/caught my interest; The Equaliser, Roar, Stargate Atlantis, BSG, The Lone gunmen and many others. A couple I've even read the fan fiction for.
And this leads to my final question - How come I write/read fan fiction for some shows and not others?

Date: 2009-07-12 02:50 am (UTC)I write in very few fandoms I love. I can't ever see writing B7, even though I love the show to death. No idea why.

Date: 2009-07-12 05:02 am (UTC)I tried writing Btvs/Angel fic, a couple of times, but even though I watched both shows religiously I just couldn't seem to get the voices down. I was much better at Firefly, back when I was actually writing. (Speaking of that, aren't I supposed to beta something for you?)
I got into a new fandom last year, the Sentinel; and let me tell ya, this is some of the best written fanfic ever. The slash is practically canon. *g*

Date: 2009-07-12 05:10 am (UTC)I do understand though. Back in the day one of the reasons I didn't read as much Trek fic as I wanted was because it was nearly all slash! Would it surprise you to learn I never read any slash until Firefly? And that was not until more than a year in the fandom.
Yes you are supposed to beta for me - when I write it! It's not due till, I think, September so I have time. I've got the chapter outline and idea mapped out - would you like to see???? *needs reassurance*

There are some damn good vids in the fandom, too -
eee Labyrinth of Gedref! That's my favourite. So very slashy and UNICORNS (something you want to tell us, Merlin?)

Date: 2009-07-12 10:56 am (UTC)Firefly! My first fandom and enduring. So much love, always. I've written and read and iconed and discussed and will keep doing so and it's time for me to have a rewatch.
Merlin - new and shiny. I don't think it's a particularly good show (how can you have anything that's set in vaguely medieval times and have no reference to religion at all and let me not even start on how it treats women/poc), but it's light and fun and cute and pretty. And some of the fic is pretty damn good.
Leverage - I've written a little for it, plan on writing more (must finish
True Blood - is borderline. I love the show, a great deal, can't wait for Sunday, but I'm not mad on the books and I don't feel any urge to seek out fanfic for it. I suspect most of the fanfic wouldn't focus on my areas of interest, anyway, which are currently Sam, MaryAnne and Tara. And Eric. Oh lord yes Eric.
Sons of Anarchy - some of the best TV I've seen in a very long time. I have plans to write for this, but because of the quality of the show, I'm actually approaching that a lot more seriously.
Torchwood/Doctor Who - in that order because I love both shows. I loved s3 of Torchwood against popular fannish opinion, I can't stand TW or DW fandom. And I've had enough of Ten already, though I have deep love for David Tennant.
Lucifer Box - my only book-based fandom. Stylish, witty, degenerate, louche and utterly conceited, I fell in love with Lucifer in chapter one of The Vesuvius Club and Charlie as soon as he appeared. My tin hat is firmly on for Lucifer and Charlie.
A Knight's Tale - this is to be blamed on Paul Bettany,
argh there are so many more, I just can't remember them all and this is really quite long enough already. So, BlackAdder, Red Dwarf, Spooks, Supernatural, and, um, anything else I've written.
ETA - I knew I'd forget one of the important ones. The Authority.
(no subject)
Date: 2009-07-12 11:49 am (UTC)I've watched Hustle which I think Leverage is based on? But haven't got to watch the other yet. It's on my download schedule though!
The Authority? Tell me more...?
(no subject)
Date: 2009-07-12 12:01 pm (UTC)The Authority is a comics world created by Warren Ellis, follow on from Storm Watch - the idea is that they are created superhumans rather than mutated or naturally evolved, and rather than dealing with bad guys and restoring things to the way they were, they aim to actively make things better. Except of course it never quite works out like that, and they're all spectacularly fucked-up individuals, and then there's Midnighter and Apollo who are the most awesome couple in all of comics. Midnighter is the ultimate anti-hero.

Date: 2009-07-12 10:59 am (UTC)And I know what you mean about only reading/writing for some fandoms and not others. I've never written for buffy/angel and i've never read/written x-files stuff, even though I love those shows. Couldn't tell you why though. I guess there are just some shows/characters that inspire us more.
