Alright, mostly all I got done was putting together two versions of the same scene that I'd written in my notebook. This fic is turning out to be very difficult. It's not going in the direction yet that I need it to go in!

Well with yours what direction do you want it to go in?

And with mine - I'm writing the wedding scene in Letters (the one I can't write) and the following chapters.

I'm working on the theory that Kaylee would write to Simon if he stayed on the planet
so here's her letters to Simon and the start of his reply


Dear Kaylee, Youre a good girl looking after Jayne hes a handful that one. You moving in together aint sudden I knew how it would be the minute I saw you together. How come Zoe did your tests what about the medic? I visit Simon and Mattie does too hes settling in andll soon get used to everything. I went over and checked the other house and the garden alls fine there. Love Ellen

Dear Simon, Yes Im writing to you dont be all amazed. Whatevers happened between us were friends and always will be. I wanted to make sure youre doing alright I know everybody sort of decided for you what would happen. You went along with it and all but I wanna be sure! Are you settling in ok? What about the folks youve gotta train are they nice? Were doing fine here weve just delivered the first load and picked up the next. There was no problems Simon imagine that! Noone even got a scratch. Nara and the Captain are doing good arguing like always but thats their way and Im used to it now. Rivers doing fine shes such a good pilot one of the captains back planetside offered her another job. She aint leaving even though she pretended to think about it to rile the Captain. She couldnt leave Serenity anymore than I can. My ship is doing good you all looked after her fine. I aint doing too much work yet dont worry Jayne babies me something awful and does all the hard work. I am looking forward to getting back into my work soon though. How does the tests look? Ellens gonna be checking on you she cant help mothering so dont be all offended. Were all looking after River so you can be easy. Love Kaylee

I think Kaylee would definitely write to simon. And if the pressure is off their relationship, they'd be quite good friends.

My story has to go through the whole gamut of post-bdm issues for Zoe, to some connection for her and Jayne, to wall!sex. lol, so it's going to be a much bigger story than I thought.

Just the first part. It's a bit all over the place at the moment. Let me see if I can put a little excerpt here.

*sigh* I'd put another section for you to read, but it's all a jumble and won't make any sense anyway, so here's just a snippet of the beginning:

Jayne figures he knows what Zoe needs.

She needs someone to get in her way a little—shake her out of her silence. Cause Zoe's got to walking around the ship like a ghost. Someone oughta remind her that just 'cause Wash's dead, it don't mean she is. Everyone else is walking on pins and needles around her, even the Captain, and Jayne'll be damned if he's gonna do that.

So he don't treat her no different. In fact, he goes out of his way to push her some, see if she'll push back. 'Cause a woman like Zoe, she don't want to be treated like no China doll.

Well I like the beginning. At first you think Jayne's answer is sex, but then it's to push her!

So what about Zoe's response to this is it next? Or do we get a description of the said 'shaking up'?

not much in the way of zoe's response in this fic. it's all Jayne pov I think. But next comes some description and then a small bit of interaction.

We'll see. I had wanted to post it before the month was out, but that is clearly not going to happen. Even if it is Leap Year! :)

So here's a question. Are there pairings that you have difficulty writing (in a fic that's specifically about them) because you think there are very few ways to legitimately get them together?

For me, the answer is yes. And Jayne/Zoe is definitely one of them. I can only see the connection happening in a very few ways and those have been done (even in the SMALL number of J/Z fics there are), so it's hard not to just write the same thing. Creativity is lacking for me with this pairing! lol

I agree that Z/J would be especially hard, because unlike the other pairings it's pretty hard to re-interpret pre-BDM.

I know many of the ways they can get together has been done, but that's only a problem in your mind. It's how you interpret your way, that matters. Most stories have already been done, it's the interpretation that differs. Also I think there's always a different slant and perspective on every situation which writers (hopefully) can provide.

Other pairings I have difficulty in seeing would be Mal/River; and it's not really the age difference or Inara there; it's a whole host of things :D

I definitely agree about the Mal/River. They are hard to imagine them legitimately going from their very (imho) platonic relationship to something more. But, oddly enough, I could envision a world where Joss might have taken them there (you know in the 7th season after everyone else was dead and River was more mature and at least somewhat more stable). Ah, but I babble...
