download and install winrar (it will usually say it's free for a 'trial period' but I never had to pay for it, even after the period was 'up'). Then, right click on the .rar file and pick whichever 'extract' option you want - the difference is just the location (it's own folder, just straight what's in the .rar, or you can choose specifically where on your hard drive). Then a little extraction window will pop up, and the progress bar lets you know how long until you get to enjoy your media!
oh, when you download/install the program, all of your .zip and .rar files will transfer to the winrar icons - don't worry, you can still use zip with this program (if that's your preferred method of compression), and you can use the archiver if you want to make .rar yourself.
