“Open up you bastard!” Sam Battle thumped on the door again.

“Calm down boy,” Joe cautioned his son.

Although he’d promised Andy he wouldn’t do anything, he sure wouldn’t mind if Chad got roughed up some. He’d just come along to make sure Sam didn’t bang the man up too badly. A few bruises would be ok; it served Chad right for hurting his little girl. But she wouldn’t thank either of them if Shelten was too badly injured.

“Calm down? That arrogant jerk hurt my sister. I’m going to kill him.” Sam kicked the door in front of him just as it jerked open. “Shelten!” He snarled and as soon as it came fully open, swung his fist, connecting solidly with the man’s face.

Chad’s head snapped back, but he retaliated and shot out his own fist, the force of it sending Sam tumbling to the ground. “Go away,” he snapped as he grabbed hold of the doorway to steady himself.

Joe took in the sight in front of him and sighed. Chad was wavering on his feet and looked like hell. Even when in his civvies, the man was particular about his appearance. Now he was standing there in what looked like yesterday’s clothes, his short hair mussed and clutching a half empty bottle of bourbon in his hand.

“Go sit in the car,” Joe ordered Sam who was getting off the floor, a murderous expression in his eyes.

“What?” his son sputtered. “No way, not after what he’s done to Andy. I’m gonna…”

“Go sit in the car,” Joe repeated. “Now.”

He waited while Sam stomped out to the car, anger in every step. His kids knew better than to argue with him when he used that tone. He turned and used it again on the man in front of him. “You want to explain yourself son?”

“No,” Chad growled.

Joe regarded him thoughtfully. He’d seen Chad down a sizeable amount of liquor without being more than a little tipsy. But the man was falling down drunk and it didn’t look like it was the first time he’d been so either.

“I’m glad you’re feeling sorry for yourself,” Joe snapped. “Making my girl cry.”

Andy was crying? Chad winced and took another slug from the bottle, even if he managed to get out of this mess intact, she wouldn’t take him back. He sure as hell didn’t deserve it either. Morosely he tilted the bottle back again only to find it smacked out of his hand.

“What the hell…?”

“Now I don’t know what you’re up to,” Joe glared at him, “And not that I care, but turning into a drunk won’t help; you’ll lose your job as well as my daughter.”

Chad winced again at the blunt words, but nodded. He knew he was being stupid. He needed to be sharp in order to defeat Detweiler and protect the others. It was just he hadn’t expected losing Andy to hurt so much.

“You going to tell me what’s going on?” Joe’s voice interrupted his thoughts.

“No,” Chad shook his head. He liked to think he and Joe had been friends, and even if they weren’t, there was no way was he going to endanger anyone else.

Joe shrugged. “It’s your loss. I won’t offer again.”

Chad watched him march, ramrod straight, down the path and turned back inside to the unopened bottle of bourbon sitting on the table. Picking it up, he stowed it in the back of a kitchen cupboard and squared his shoulders as he headed for the shower. No way was Detweiler going to hurt anyone because he couldn’t stay sharp.

...I still think you should have kept the title as "open up you bastard" LOL. And reminiscing in the shower would've been good *hinty hint hint* but this is good too :D

I love Sam just charging in there half-cocked and smacking him though.

I gotta brake down and buy more icon storage - this was the only Chad icon I still had active.

Nice job! I, too, liked Sam's hotheaded approach to defending his sister. Poor Chad, what a delimma to be facing.

Welcome home!

Thanks for the welcome *hugs you*. Sam's heart is in the right place, he's just impetuous! I really want Chad to get himself out of this in one piece. I'm watching [livejournal.com profile] ladytalon1 closely!
