“The worm will turn,” River informed the table at large. “And the early bird will catch it.”

“That’s fine sweetie,” Kaylee smiled at her.

“It ain’t so good for the worm.”

“What?” the Captain asked.

“The bird would eat the worm; there ain’t much fun in that.”

“I’m fairly sure we aren’t talking about an actual bird,” Simon interrupted. “Or an actual worm either.”

“Oh,” Jayne stared at his plate feeling stupid.

“Ya didn’t know,” Kaylee lent against his shoulder comfortingly.

“Turning worm,” River muttered sotto voice.

Jayne glanced at Kaylee and raised his eyebrows.

River nodded, giggling. “Early bird.”

Your River is great with her cryptic words. I am a little confused as to what has happened that would cause River to say the words and why Kaylee is there to comfort Jayne (not that I mind the comforting, not one bit). Sequel, perhaps?
