Dear Ellen,
I’m so sorry for my delay in writing to you. Thank you for the gifts you sent to tide over my boredom. They were welcome my friend. I didn’t realise how much I actually use my arm and hand. My injury was quite eye-opening in that respect.
Of course I was trained to use my left hand as well as my right. But I don’t normally Ellen, so had to relearn all my skills. Writing though was harder to master and very frustrating. I was irritated with myself. Both Zoë and Inara offered to write to you for me, but I said no thank you. I like to be able to tell you everything and would feel constraint if I dictated to them. It’s wonderful to be able to write to you and Kaylee again.
Although I can write now, I must wait another week before I can fly Serenity. I believe Simon is coddling me once more. He was most upset when I got shot and was threatening to leave the ship again.
It was no-one’s fault Ellen. A stray bullet went through the glass on the bridge and I was unfortunate enough to be standing there. I have never been injured before; aside from the pain, it was disorientating and frightening. I don’t know how anyone can stand that happening to them constantly. Yet the Captain, Jayne and to a lesser extent Zoë, shrug off such occurrences regularly.
Since I’ve been injured I’ve been reading some of my book collection and enjoying it so much. Reading for pleasure and leisure wasn’t much encouraged in our household. Books were always present, but they were for learning or for status, not just for pure enjoyment.
Now, for the first time I’m reading an eclectic mix of titles. My father would definitely not approve of ‘The Space Captain’s Bride’, but I find its gentle humour and beliefs in the power of love refreshing.
Our last job went smoothly and our next is upon us. We will be smuggling liquor and the Lion is very excited.
My Fifi is well and I’m training her to be the ring bearer for the wedding ceremony. This is a very important position for a dog and she must be adequately prepared. The Captain has assured me he has a back-up ring in his possession. Fifi and I ignore him, our noses in the air.
Did you enjoy the trip to Gowan? Tell me of all your adventures? Jayne is well as are all the others, including Simon. His health has improved again, thank Buddha and you. Your advice was, as always, excellent.
Look after yourself my friend.
Love River
Dear River, Im glad you and Simon are improving and bet youre happy to be flying again. Our trip was wonderful. I sold all my pretties and when Kaylee weren’t working or tired we painted the town. Mattie survived just fine and rubs it in every chance he gets. Simons just being an older brother be patient with him girl he loves you. Your book sounds fun remember girl you can read what you want dont feel guilty over it. Kaylees got another job over at the mines and me and Mattie are well. Love Ellen
Dear Ellen,
Your boy is alright, please don’t worry. After being unconscious for two days and worrying us mightily, he’s back to complaining about his ‘incarceration’ in the infirmary. He is his old self and the Captain and Simon want to kill him. All is as normal – except -
My Serenity was hurt. Am I to blame? I feel it is so and worry that I’m not the right pilot for the job. Also, angry thoughts invaded my head and I was next to useless in the battle against the pirates. Jayne was injured assisting me. I’ll understand if you and Mattie don’t wish me to write again.
Since Jayne needs time to recover, the Captain has hired another mechanic. He appears competent and is taking care of Serenity. He advises that if we want to keep flying, a visit to the shipyards in necessary. This may delay our return. I’m sorry Ellen.
Despite being boarded we have delivered our cargo safely and received a bonus. I used some of mine to purchase more books.
They are handy as Jayne amusers. Since he’s not allowed to do anything more strenuous than sitting up, he is bored. I have discovered that he enjoys being read to; and we have some interesting discussions about the characters and situations in the stories. Some of the others come to listen as well, and I try to read things they might like. The Captain is partial to poetry, Inara enjoys humour and wit, Simon loves mysteries and both Jayne and Zoë have a liking for romances.
We have some time before our next job which is already organised. We’ll be smuggling dresses again; and have this time been promised our pick of the cargo as part payment! All those beautiful gowns; I won’t know what to choose.
My dear brother finally acknowledged he knew nothing about choosing clothes for girls and has retired from the ranks. He did suggest that Inara or Zoë chose for me, but fortunately they refused. I am to choose for myself. Of course I’ll ask my friend’s advise Ellen, but I haven’t told Mr Boob that yet.
Mattie is a tease, although he did for himself very well, he missed you and Kaylee. I know this because we have been writing to each other. I hope you don’t mind Ellen? I do enjoy the notes he sends me and feel almost normal for the attention.
I’m glad Kaylee is improving, we miss her so much. It is hard to tell which is more anticipated, her return, or the wedding. Thank you so much for caring for her. I hope you and Mattie are well and not worried about Jayne.
Love River
River dear child we aint gonna stop writing to you. Those pirates hurt Jayne not you theres no need to feel guilty bout that or anything else. Talk about your troubles to your friends remember theyll help you. I think Mattie and you writing is fine and like that he picked you to be interested in. Caring for Kaylee aint hard and she cares for us right back. Her and Mattie fixed the hothouse for me I was so surprised. Thank you for looking after my other boy he can be difficult I know. Love Ellen
Dear Ellen,
Your letter brought tears to my eyes. Isn’t that silly? You helped me again dear friend and with so little words to. How do you do it? I find it hard to choose the right words when I want to say something important. Although I have improved, I communicate much better in writing than speaking.
The Captain assures me that my skills aren’t deficient and that no-one could have avoided the pirates. He said I did well to keep them from boarding as long as I did. It gave the others time to prepare a defence that in the end rescued our ship. That comforts me.
Fifi is a good comfort too right now. She and the lion are the only ones on board who know the secret. I am not supposed to know, but Simon’s thoughts grew loud and I heard. I haven’t said anything to Kaylee; I don’t want to add to her worries. But is she alright Ellen? I know how much she loves my brother and how much she was wishing to see him.
Since Simon has yet to say anything about this, I can’t discuss it with anyone but you. The lion is clearly trying to control his urge to kill my brother and I don’t want to make things worse for him.
I wish my dear boob would talk to me. He really doesn’t have anyone to discuss his troubles with. As his sister, I would be the logical choice. But he considers me too fragile. How can I convince him otherwise Ellen? I would like to help and repay him for all the wonderful care he has given me.
I’m sorry for writing such a depressing letter so shall end on a happier note. I’m happy Mattie picked me to be interested in too! Our correspondence has bought us closer and I long to see him and take advantage of those dark corners. Of course I have no notion how our relationship might progress, but relish the opportunity to try and have one.
Look after yourself dear friend. Give my love to Kaylee and Mattie.
Love River
Dear River, Noone can be happy all the time you can write to me whatever your feelings. You take the first step with Simon and tell him what youve heard. Remember to listen to him without getting upset girl thats the hardest thing. Itll prove youre grown up and can help him I think he needs it. Kaylees trying to understand what happened but is still very sad. I listen whenever she needs to talk. Lucky shes real busy right now and that helps too. She cuddles the kitten like you do Fifi and that comforts her too. Whatever you and Mattie decide is awright with me I love you girl. Love Ellen
