Jayne stood unnoticed in the doorway. He only had himself to blame. If he hadn’t been mean, cross-grained and too stupid to talk to her it might be him standin’ beside her grinnin’ like a loon. But Kaylee was happy, that was all that mattered.

“Heart broken,” the crazy girl’s voice was quiet.

“Don’t have a heart girl.”

“It’s hidden,” she nodded. “But functioning.”

“Ifen it’s functionin’ then it ain’t broken,” Jayne growled.

“I could mend it if you’d let me,” River said wistfully to his back, wishing she could summon up the courage to say it to his face.
