Dear Ellen,

I spoke to Zoë as you suggested and she doesn’t resent me for what occurred and that has offered some relief. She is not relieved, her grief echoes and I say nothing or worse, ramble and do not offer comfort.

As I told you in my last letter I have been learning to fly. I love it more with each passing day. The freedom, the expanse, the lack of worrying thoughts ground me. The sense of being part of the whole is wonderful too. I now contribute and am happier for it. When we are abroad, my status of assistant pilot makes other people look at me differently, almost with respect. I like that; I’m no longer just ‘the strange one.’

Kaylee and I work closely together to keep Serenity running. She accepts me always and is never afraid of my moods or what I might be. She is sad though right now. Her grandmother has died and this has affected her. Social platitudes are useless. Kaylee is real – what do I say? I never know what to say and neither does Simon.

The Captain has arranged some work, but we are on our way to you. I know the lion is thankful though he doesn’t say so. He finds it hard to speak to my brother. That he did so at all shows a brothers’ love. They have that in common. Perhaps that’s why they don’t get along.

I’ve plotted the quickest course between jobs so that we can be with you soon. I look forward so much to meeting you and your other boy Ellen. I hope you won’t be disappointed in me.

Yours River

Dear River, girl noone would be disappointed to meet you don’t say such things just cause youre different don’t mean you aint worthy of love or liking. Look how much the folks on board care for you speaking of that is Jayne behaving well to you? Speaking to Zoe was good girl remember grief takes time sometimes years to heal just keep trying. Just hug Kaylee you don’t have to say anything shell understand sometimes whatever you say aint right don’t worry over it. Me and Mattie can’t wait to see you all Love Ellen

Dear Ellen

I am a Mother! Well a pet owner at least.

As a child the ownership of pets was discouraged even frowned upon, I never understood why. Did you have pets, have them still? I find my little dog a comfort at times. Yes she is a dog, Fifi by name and beagle by nature. The Captain and Jayne laughed at her name, saying it was sissified. I think it delightful and love to cuddle her. Of course she requires much looking after. But she is more easily cared for than Simon and is less boobish too.

We had some difficulty on our last job; the Captain and Zoë were injured. Your boy got nicked with a bullet, but was otherwise unhurt. Everyone is concerned for our second in command, her grief affects everyone.

Don’t worry about Jayne; he’s treating me almost like crew. Last week he nearly called me by name and even played a joke on me! He still watches me with Kaylee, but that is ingrained and can be excused, his protective instincts are strong. He approved of me comforting her I know.

I did as you said and held Kaylee while she cried about her grandmother. I felt I was helping my friend, returning all the comfort she has given me. I think it helped both of us.

Inara has left her profession and now works as a Mediator. Her new position seems to suit her well, although I can’t understand why she doesn’t use her skills on the Captain. Her position has ensured us another job though, one that will earn us good money and bring us closer to you.

Thank you for being so kind and accepting of me.

Yours always,
River

Dear River, beagles are beautiful dogs and I like the name Fifi it’s a good choice. Yes we had pets still do right now I have two cats and a dog the cats belong to Mattie really he finds them a comfort. Im glad Jayne is treating you better I hope the joke was kindly? Youre a good hearted girl to worry bout your friends be patient with them all and I will see you soon Love Ellen

Dear Ellen,

Our first job went as planned. No-one was injured, everyone performed well, and we earned coin! I have adopted the vernacular you see, the excitement is infectious.

Kaylee and I went shopping and she helped me choose some clothes. I tried on many more than I could buy and we giggled like school girls and had such fun. There was money left over and I bought some toys for Fifi.

She comes with me everywhere, even trying to follow me into the infirmary. It is unsanitary and Simon doesn’t like it. I hope to use the toys to train her. It was Kaylee’s suggestion and I have since researched on The Cortex and think I can teach her with kindness. Imposing my will on another creature though? Do what was done to me? It is unsettling, worrying; I would not treat my Fifi so.

Am I being foolish? I haven’t told anyone else, they might start worrying about me again. Please tell me what you think.

The Captain and Zoe are pleased with my flying ability and I am now considered the pilot. Kaylee made me a cake to celebrate and everyone smiled. I’m really one of the crew, the family now. Even to Jayne, the most stubborn one. The joke he played on me was friendly Ellen, as if he considers me part of the group.

Our second job has also gone without a hitch, it is very unsettling. We’re not used to things going so smoothly you see. But I’m grateful because it means we can proceed to the next job and then at last we fly to you. We will be there my friend, in approximately 13 days, 12 hours, 35 minutes and 50 seconds; I’m sorry I can not be more accurate than that.

Yours River

Your River voice just gets better and better. I especially loved this: "Our first job went as planned. No-one was injured, everyone performed well, and we earned coin! I have adopted the vernacular you see, the excitement is infectious."

Love that Jayne is beginning to treat her like crew/family, and that the meeting isn't too far away now. I'm curious as to how you're going to write that part - are you going to stick with letters, or is a style switch in order? Can't wait to find out - though I guess I'll probably have to. :)

Thanks for the great comment - I always worry about getting River's voice right and you've relieved me greatly :)

The meeting isn't far away - and I have no idea how I'm going to write it!! *wibble* Hope you won't have to wait too long...

Awww Fifi!

I love that River's accepted into the crew... about time, too!

*sighs blissfully*

Will there be more letters before they visit Ma Cobb?

Yay River! I'm glad she's feeling one of the family at last and isn't Fifi cute?

I think the next chapter (however I write it) might be the visit! If I can get it right *worries*

"I'm sorry I can not be more accurate than that."

Bwahahahaha! She means it too.

I'm so loving this series.

"I'm sorry I can not be more accurate"

lol! She's even got it down to the seconds - I enjoy this series almost as much as the Letters series :) Of course she wouldn't really want to train Fifi, that was well thought out.

Yay! You liked the not training bit! I was worried about that and btw is that you in the icon? How cool!

I can completely see her POV about that; no wonder she would be skittish about it! Though I suspect if Fifi isn't trained, Mal will pitch a fit - esp. if she's not potty trained... Oh, you have to write that in. The comedic potential!

And yes, that's me. *g* That pairing is known as Jaytie.

Delightful! I loved that River compared her brother to the dog:

"Of course she requires much looking after. But she is more easily cared for than Simon and is less boobish too.

The deliberate specificity of her language feels right on.

That was a very sisterly comment don't you think? And I'm happy you think I got her language right *twirls*

*Happy sigh* Just a sweet chapter... I love River's excitement- her youth is finally coming through in a healthy way...Well Done!

I like this one, you do a really good job with River. I like that she was worrying about training FiFi.
