Where’s Daddy?” Kaylee asked.

They were the words Lily had been dreadin’ from the moment she’d seen the Firefly fly overhead. Kaylee and Jack were always so close; her daughter would be so distressed to learn what happened.

“Come inside nu er.” Lily hugged Kaylee close, “and yer friends too and I’ll explain.”

She bustled around makin’ sure they were all sittin’ and sat down herself to have a good look at her Kaylee’s crew. She could tell who they all were from her daughter’s descriptions.

“Ma’am, your husband?” the Companion prompted softly.

“Jack’s in jail.” Lily answered pattin’ Kaylee’s hand. “They say he killed someone.”

“But Mama, he didn’t?”

“No child. He was here, but we can’t prove it. The sheriff won’t believe us.”

“How long has he been there ma’am?” the Captain asked.

“Two weeks now.” Lily’s lips quivered, “and they say when the judge comes he’ll order a hangin’.”

Kaylee’s eyes filled with tears as she cuddled her mother close. “Captain?”

“It won’t get that far Kaylee,” he reassured her. “I think we better do some investigating.”

********************

“Kaylee,” Lou Anne Trent’s voice echoed round the street. “Kaylee,” she waved.

“We have to stop Jayne.” Kaylee sighed. “Lou Anne will never let me forget it if I don’t.”

“Captain said, don’t talk to anyone.”

“Folks know me here. I have to talk and anyway, if I stop it looks more natural.” She rolled her eyes at him in exasperation before turnin’ to meet Lou Anne’s exuberant greetin’.

“Kaylee,” Lou Anne rushed up and hugged her.

“Hey girl,” Kaylee returned the hug happily. She’d been wonderin’ if anyone in town would even talk to her right now.

“Kaylee, he’s glarin’ at me.” Her friend tucked her head into Kaylee’s shoulder.

“Jayne glares at everyone,” said Kaylee glancin’ back at him over her shoulder. He was standin’ so close to her back, the man was likely to smother her.

Jayne shrugged at her and stood his ground, keepin’ his eyes on the street around them. Accordin’ to Kaylee’s brother Tom, this was where Steve had got shot. The Captain and he were pretty determined the same weren’t gonna happen to little Kaylee.

“He’s really big.” Lou Anne said, grinnin’ at him cheekily, “and kinda swai in an intimidatin’ way.”

Jayne growled impatiently and Kaylee sighed. She wished this was just an ordinary visit home, but it wasn’t and now she’d put on her natural act she had to get movin’.

“Lou Anne, I wanna talk, I do. But I’ve got to visit Daddy. I’m so worried ‘bout him.” Kaylee’s voice trembled despite herself and her friend patted her back.

“That’s ok Kaylee. When this is all over, you come over and visit. We can giggle ‘bout old times and such.”

********************

Jack Frye lay still on his cot tryin’ not to breathe. He felt like he’d been run over by a tractor. His face was achin’, his ribs hurt and he was pretty sure his arm was broken. Added to that was his worry about his family. Were they alright? What was happening to them?

He wondered if Ben had managed to find Kaylee and Captain Reynolds. From what his daughter had said about the man, he suspected that he and his crew would help them.

“Frye,” the jailer’s voice interrupted his thoughts. “Someone here ‘t see ya.”

“Daddy,” Kaylee rushed forward and her eyes widened when she caught sight of his face. “Don’t get up.” She moved around the cell till she was standin’ at the head of his cot.

“Kaylee girl,” With his good arm Jack reached through the bars to his daughter. “What are ya doin’ here?”

“I came to see ya Daddy.” She frowned at him, “we got us a transport job here and so I came to visit ya; didn’t expect to find ya in jail though.”

Jack watchin’ her narrowly, realised his daughter was puttin’ on a show for his jailer. It wasn’t a bad cover story, comin’ here for a job. It would give both her and the crew she shipped with a reason for bein’ here.

He didn’t like her bein’ at the jail though and he didn’t like the way the ben dan jailer was leerin’ at her. He was about to say somethin’ about it when the man moved uncomfortably and hastily looked at the ground.

Jack glanced at the doorway into the office to see a big man loom up behind Kaylee. Since she didn’t start actin’ jumpy Jack figured this fella was with her.

“This is Jayne Daddy, he’s ships’ mercenary.”

“Jayne,” Jack nodded and received a nod back but the man didn’t speak, just let his eyes flick around the cell area till they came to rest on the jailer.

The hard blue stare soon had the man shiftin’ nervously from foot to foot, till eventually he left the room.

“Ya got ten minutes Kaylee. Better make the most of them.” Jayne turned his back to give the girl and her father some privacy.

********************

“The sheriff must be real sloppy. The deputies didn’t search us when we came in, didn’t even take my girls off me.” Jayne was unimpressed by the kinda jail the man kept. Sheriff Stackpoole would never have allowed that. “The keys for the cells are hangin’ right there in the open, not even in a drawer or nothin’.”

“Daddy’s been beaten up,” said Kaylee distressed.

Lily gasped and her voice rose. “They hit him?”

“Couple broken ribs, broken arm and ankle, I’d say.” Jayne catalogued the man’s injuries more thoroughly.

“How do you know that?” Ben asked.

Jayne shrugged. “Just do.”

“How bad do you reckon?” the Captain asked. If Kaylee’s daddy was hurt their plans would have to change.

“He was havin’ trouble breathin’, so I’m thinkin’ the ribs are the worse. They probably stomped on his arm and ankle; there were footprints on his clothes.”

“Jayne.” Kaylee hissed at him furiously as she clung to her mother’s hands.

Lily’s face went white and Kaylee hastily handed her mother a glass of water and looked at the other family members. They were horrified.

“Mal asked me.” Jayne protested.

“Mrs Frye, I didn’t think.” Mal interrupted. He shoulda realised that Kaylee’s folks weren’t used to violent things happening to them and theirs. “Maybe we can go talk about this someplace else.”

“No,” Lily squared her shoulders. “We need to know what’s happenin’ so we can help ya if we have to.”

“Doc, can Kaylee’s daddy be moved in that condition? Like on the mule’s trailer for example.”

“He could.” Simon nodded cautiously. “As long as he moved as little as possible and was attended to straight after.”

“Can you teach Kaylee and Jayne what to do to help him?”

“Huh?” Jayne and Kaylee asked at the same time.

“Mrs Frye and I…”

“Lily,” Lily corrected.

“I talked to Lily earlier ‘bout hiding your daddy Kaylee.” The Captain explained. “The first place the sheriff’s gonna look is here.”

“From what the Shepherd and I learned in town today,” Zoë continued. “It’s our theory that the bad guys will be escalating their takeover in town, causing more trouble.”

“I figure to be here for that.” Mal stated plainly. “Folks are going to need a fighting force whether they know it or not and likely as not we’ll be wanting the Doc.”

“What do ya mean about hidin’ Daddy?” Kaylee asked confused.

“We’re gonna break him out of jail.” The Captain grinned his reckless grin at her. “Well you and Jayne are gonna break him out of jail.”

“What?”

“Wait a minute Mal.”

“Leave the man in there and the opposition has a powerful bargaining chip. Get him out and we can move easier.” Zoë explained.

“So me and Kaylee break him outta jail and take him where, and for how long?” Jayne asked. This weren’t one of Mal’s better ideas. Kaylee helpin’ with a jail break, with guns firin’ and folks maybe gettin’ killed; he couldn’t see it.

“He can’t come here. It’s the first place they’d search.” Mal was in full planning mode.

“We might need Serenity, so he can’t be hidden there; and they’d search there too of course. So you’re gonna take him to a place just the family knows of and hide out there.”

I love Jayne being all intimidating and protective over Kaylee, and his tactless listing of Jack's injuries made me laugh.

Wow, you're really writing an action series here! Love the idea of them breaking him out of jail and that they're going to fight with the townsfolk. Mal would be all for that in a second, of course.

Good job, keep 'em coming!

Every time I wrote those words, I thought of that song. I can hear Bon Scott singing it now and even (god help me) remember his actions on the film clip....duh!

Jayne is the epitome of tactlessness and intimidating here. Isn't he great?

I thought Mal would definitely have to involve himself in any sort of resistance and protecting the townsfolk too? How could he resist?

And with Kaylee's daddy in jail there has to be a jail break. I just hope I can write a believable one!
