Hi! I'm from the US. I have heard a number of news stories warning against students heading to Mexico for spring break, and that there are areas of Mexico that should be avoided at all costs.
Apparently what is happening is that visitors are being kidnapped and held for ransom--never a good thing! Also, the drug lords/traffickers are bold and violence abounds.
A friend in San Diego/southern California used to head to Mexico withe friends for golfing at swanky resorts across the border, but fear doing so at this time...
IMHO, I don't think it's just paranoia. But it certainly is a shame. Sorry about your cruise!
