Jayne walked along beside Kaylee, his fingers burnin’. He hadn’t meant to touch her, hadn’t meant to tell her ‘bout the fire neither. For all his proud thoughts ‘bout the girl not bein’ able to get him to talk, he’d sure spilled his guts.
Just as well he’d stopped talkin’ when he did; he didn’t want her knowin’ how the fire had started. Have her look at him with pity or somethin’. Jayne frowned as Kaylee shivered for the third time in as many minutes. Was she cold? She was dressed in those bulky coveralls and had a coat pulled over that. But she were still rubbin’ her arms with her hands.
Kaylee’s skin was still tinglin’ from where Jayne’s fingers touched her and it was makin’ her confused. Jayne had touched her plenty of times before, helpin’ in the engine room, playin’ hoop ball and such. Why was she feelin’ this now?
Probably all Inara’s talk of Jayne’s feelins for her had got her all bothered. Kaylee didn’t want their comfortable friendship to be ruined by her silliness. ‘Specially when she really weren’t sure if ‘Nara was right. Unconsciously she rubbed her hands up and down her arms and was startled when a coat descended on her shoulders.
“Jayne?” He were standin’ like a wall at her back as he pulled his coat over her shoulders. “What’d ya do that for?”
“Ya been shiverin’. Mal will kill me if ya come back with a cold.”
“What about ya, ain’t ya cold?”
“Not right now, no.” Not with his hands and fingers burnin’ again from touchin’ her.
“Jayne?”
“Hmmm?” He glanced down to find Kaylee starin’ at him with her ‘I’m beggin’ ya look’ and knew he was gonna do whatever she wanted.
“Can we get the supplies first?”
“Do ya think that’s a good idea?” he countered fightin’ the eyes and pretty smile.
“No.” Kaylee rested her hand on the lump that was Misty. “But I ain’t quite ready to give her up yet.”

“Reynolds’ crew was the one that took on Niska in his own skyplex.” Hatcher the leadin’ thug of his four new men scowled. “That wouldn’tve been easy I’m thinkin’. Our targets might be a lot tougher than you let on.”
Rich looked him over lazily, “I thought Hanson said you fellas were the best.”
“We are. But we ain’t stupid.” Hatcher didn’t back down, “the crew of that boat has a reputation that says their not gonna be easy. I’m thinkin’ we should be gettin’ more coin for this job.”
“I’m already payin’ a decent amount over the goin’ rate.” Rich snarled back at him, “and Hanson guaranteed ya wouldn’t ask question.”
“Ain’t exactly askin’ questions, just want more coin.”
“Look I’ll tell ya what.” Rich decided he’d better sweeten the pot. He didn’t have time to go recruit more men, so he’d have to give a little with this lot for now.
“I’m plannin’ on takin’ the Firefly for my own, but I don’t need the cargo or any of the crew stuff. Yer all welcome to take what you want from that.”
The four men exchanged glances and Hatcher nodded. “It’s a deal. We get whatever ya don’t need to fly that boat.”
“Deal.” Rich leant back in his chair and looked at his men. “I’m needin’ some reports.”
“Ship’s landed. Dock Captain says it’s due for takeoff tomorrow.” Tom was always good at snugglin’ up to the dock authorities. “They ain’t wastin’ much time here.”
“Who would? It’s gorram freezin’. Anythin’ else?”
“Bob says that our target has left the boat and Carl’s followin’. Some of the other crew left too, we need someone on them.”
“One of us will go.” Hatcher gestured at the man leavin’ the room.
“Good.” Rich gave a feral grin, “let’s go over the plan.”

“Hi Mr Bevis!” Kaylee’s voice was cheerful as they entered the machine shop.
“Kaylee, good to see you,” the man came out from behind the counter and gave her hug. “I’ve got plenty of new parts here for you to see.”
“Kaylee,” Jayne growled, “Mal said no engine parts, remember?”
“Oh I ain’t gonna buy any Jayne.” She beamed at the shop-keeper, “me and Mr Bevis just like to talk shop that’s all.”
“Nobody can talk engines better than this little girl.” The shop-keeper smiled at her. “I love her visits.”
Kaylee smiled back and glancin’ at Jayne patted her stomach. “I got somethin’ else to ask ya later too.”
Jayne sighed, at least she hadn’t forgotten the kitten. He leant against the counter and watched as Kaylee and the shop-keeper both began to talk at once. It appeared they were gonna be here for awhile.
