Thanks to the awesome

Jayne turned to go back to his transport, relieved he could finally be rid of the annoying thief. It’d be real fine to get back to Serenity now that Wing was dead. He was already tryin’ to work out the best way to tell Zoe ‘bout it when he spied a slight movement from behind the dead bodies. Freezing in place, Jayne scanned the surrounding area
He’d been sorta expecting Wing to have more men hidden around, and though he’d seen a few hun dans back aways, he’d avoided them easily and there’d been none close. His eyes swept the area again and he caught a flash of dark hair and was stunned to recognise River. The girl must have picked up on his thoughts ‘cause she stepped out of cover and waved to him urgently.
“Jayne,” River waved toward the big mercenary in relief.
“Jayne?” Zoe frowned and tried to ignore the relief which flooded through her. “He here?” They’d left him behind, what was he doing here?
“Yes,” River bent to the wound again. “He’s coming now.” Her brows knitted, “There were no auditory indicators…”
“He’s mighty silent when he wants to be,” Zoe stated. “I didn’t hear him either girl, don’t worry.”
River shook her head. “Will be blamed.”
“No you won’t.”
“Not me,” River remarked worriedly. “Jayne…”
“Yeah I’m here,” the big man loomed up behind them. “How come you ain’t…?” His voice trailed off when he saw Zoe lying on the ground. Glancing from the dead bodies to her position, he realised that it’d been his shot that hit her.
“Blood loss minimised; needs medical attention,” River’s voice stopped his recriminations before they began.
“Still don’t look good,” ignoring all the skin that Zoe was displaying, Jayne examined the wound. “She gonna make it?”
“Indications are good.”
“I’m glad to hear it,” Zoe’s voice was dry. “Now how about we think about getting out of here; it’s a fair walk to Serenity and we didn’t bring communicators.”
River opened her mouth to answer but Jayne interrupted their strategising impatiently and slid his arms under Zoe’s shoulders, picking her up gently. “I’ve gotta a boat, we can go meet them.”
“You have?” Zoe turned her head to look at him and he flashed her a grim smile.
“How’d ya think I got here?”
“Luck?”
“It weren’t luck that shot ya,”
“Just the Captain’s brand of luck,” unconsciously Zoe relaxed in his hold. “No-one’s gonna blame you.”
****************
“Ya took yer time didn’t ya?” Badger’s querulous voice met their ears as they opened the boat’s door. Jayne had been gone more than a couple of hours and he’d been starting to think the big mercenary was gonna leave him there to die.
“Ya think I’d leave ya here to die?” Jayne carefully laid Zoe on the couch, while River examined the ship’s controls.
“Wouldn’t ya?”
“Well yeah,” Jayne exchanged a grin with River. “But not in the boat, it’s worth some coin.”
“Thanks,” the thief answered sarcastically and settled back against the wall as his ship lifted off the ground. “Where are we goin’ now and what’s gonna happen to me?”
“Mother awaits the wandering chicks.”
“Back to Serenity,” Jayne translated. “Zoe here,” he indicated the only half-conscious woman, “will decide the rest.”
****************
“She gonna be alright?”
Simon looked at the two big men standing in the doorway and nodded. “It’s messy and she’s lost a lot of blood, but it wasn’t too serious,” he grinned wryly. “Zoe should be up and around in a day or so.”
“Good,” Jayne said bluntly. “Now ya know she’s gonna be ok, ya can get gone,” he frowned at the man beside him.
“If it’s all the same to you, I’ll wait for Zoe to tell me that,” Nisham kept his voice even with difficulty.
Jayne didn’t get why the fella was still here. It was his man that’d betrayed them and his plan that’d got them set up. “Right now I’m in charge and I say ya wait on yer own boat.”
“I haven’t done anything wrong and it was your bullet that shot her,” Nisham flashed back.
“Yeah,” Jayne agreed heavily. “It was. But it weren’t me that set us up.”
“It wasn’t me either, just one of my men,” Nisham ground his teeth in frustration.
“Take your argument out of here,” Simon indicated the sleeping woman and followed them out the door. “Nisham, Zoe was adamant that Jayne was in no way to blame for her injuries.”
“She’s just doing the right thing and protecting her crew.”
“Maybe so,” the Doctor agreed. “But I think you should respect her wishes, don’t you? And Jayne’s right. He is in charge at the moment. So I suggest you leave. I can wave you every few hours about Zoe’s condition if you like.”
“Alright,” Nisham grumbled and headed toward his shuttle with Jayne following. “Don’t think this is going to get you anywhere with her,” he muttered to the irritating mercenary.
Jayne shrugged. He knew that Zoe wouldn’t like it, that she still weren’t happy with him arguing with her and all. She didn’t trust him worth a damn, but he was used to that and didn’t care ‘bout it much. He just wanted to protect her for now, best way he could; and that started with getting rutting Nisham off the boat.
He watched, satisfied, as the shuttle launched and headed over to Nisham’s ship. Turning he tracked back down to the lounge outside the infirmary. He could clean his guns there and wait for Zoe to wake up. See for himself she were ok.
****************
Jayne glanced sideways at Zoë as they worked at the table. Since she’d been up and about, she’d gone all silent on him. ‘Course she weren’t the type to chatter away all day, but usually there was some conversation, even a bit of joshin’ sometimes. He’d kinda liked the comfortableness between them and missed it.
He guessed she weren’t too pleased with him chasing Nisham off. Her lips had folded over like they did when she’d heard, but she hadn’t called the other man back, hadn’t over-rode his decision either. Jayne was pleased ‘bout that. Maybe Zoe was beginning to trust him a mite after all. He began to think that even more when she finally started talking to him again.
“I didn’t know you could fly.”
“There’s lots of things ya don’t know ‘bout me.”
“I’m learning that,” Zoe nodded and turned her attention back to her gun.
