Aaaaaaaaaah! Parental and technological ranting behind the cut...

The little guy's project at school for this term is "What I want to be when I grow up". He got all enthusiastic and researched his chosen career (a zoologist) till he drove me mad. Along with the research and writing etc, his class has to produce a multi-media presentation as well and he decided on making a movie. He can do all the clipping himself - he loves it, all I have to do (we thought) is take the film.

The project is due Monday.

We lined up an interview with the local animal carer and this morning I found my video camera - but no cords! Nothing to charge the thing with and nothing to plug in the computer either. Though considering the camera is at least 4 years old it probably won't be compatible with Vista anyway.

So off I trundled to school and borrowed their video camera and after work today we did the interview and filmed the wallabies and all. Now I've figured out how to download the stuff we took onto the computer - but it's in .mov format! And I only have Windows Movie Maker!!! Which is of course not compatible :(

I've spent a good two hours of fic writing time (the child's asleep - hallelujah!) on this dumb thing...Why are things not compatible? Wouldn't it be easier? But that would require co-operation from the big conglomerates - and then they wouldn't make any money - and I'll shut up now except to say -

Can anyone tell me how to convert .mov to .avi? In simple dummies terms?

I found this for you:
http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20051003_convert_mov_to_avi.html

I've never worked with video, so I can't tell you if the free software he recommends is actually any good, but reading the article it all sounds right. Good luck!
