Alarms are migraines waiting to happen. The one's on the houses in our neighborhood have flashing lights and bells that go off both inside and OUTSIDE the house, so neighbors can call the fire department if you're not home. I do know of one house on which the garage caught fire from the classic "woodstain rags in the trash" scenario, and it was saved because the neighbors called.
