cantonheroine for the wonderful banner and icon.

Dear Ellen,
I shared my fears as you suggested and it helped. Inara and Zoë were ready for me to speak. I think perhaps you and the lion had a share in that, is that not so? You are both good friends to me and I thank you.
I laughed at your remarks about using your gun. The Captain, Zoë and Jayne all said the same. It is a consensus. Perhaps I am normal after all.
Simon is recovering slowly; I am so thankful. I wrote Kaylee of it as soon as I could, she worries you know. Her heart is set on my brother Ellen and she sees no-one else. Do you think I would ever become that way about someone? It’s frightening I think.
I watch that Simon isn’t his usual over-conscientious self and works too hard. I don’t want him falling ill again. We’ve had to travel a few weeks to get here which ensured he rested.
Everyone else is well and Serenity flies true. I keep to my wiring duties and Jayne watches the engines, it wouldn’t do to fail our home or Kaylee.
Did Jayne tell you he took me hunting while we were on Haven? I was fascinated by the skills required. Of course I’ve been taught to hunt humans and there are some similarities, but somehow I felt quite different. Because hunting for food is a survival method perhaps? I’m not sure, but would like to study it.
I didn’t want to use a weapon of course, but did assist with the skinning and food preparation. Simon was horrified. But everyone else, even Inara, thinks it necessary I know how to survive and I agree. I want to be able to look after myself and the others if need be and am determined to learn.
I was pleased they thought me capable Ellen and that I was trusted enough to be included. Again it shows I’m considered part of the crew and our shipboard family. I am so happy.
Fifi is unhappy however. The lion refused to let her come hunting and she was offended I think. When we were butchering she was banished to Inara’s shuttle and has ever since looked at me reproachfully.
The Captain has arranged another job and we arrive at our destination soon. Give my love to Mattie and Kaylee.
Love River
Dear River, Youre as normal as the rest of us girl there aint no set rules to it you know. Im glad someone spoke to you they forget your age sometimes I think. Im happy Simon is feeling better Kaylee is too. Next week I let her out of bed the girl cant wait to be up and about. Loving someone can be frightening but wonderful too youll see one day. I enjoyed looking at those captures werent the dresses real elegant? Of course youre trusted and loved by your crewmates and us too. Love Ellen
Dear Ellen,
When I grew up there were rules for ‘normal’ girls and I never fit them. I like this ‘Verse better.
We’ve had problems again on the job. The Captain and Zoë were injured and we didn’t get paid. Simon worked too hard and is again resting and I am worried for him.
I wrote to Kaylee about what happened and I’m sure she’s told you; but it was your boy who saved the day Ellen. His combination of paranoia, bad temper and good fighting saved the day, though no-one but me will admit it. Why is that so? Some things I just don’t understand.
Inara and the lion are busy nursing again so I keep to my pilots’ chair, navigate and cook. Fifi has forgiven me and keeps me company as does the Captain. I enjoy my discussions with him, although we disagree on most things. Inara says that disagreement keeps the Captain breathing and I’m inclined to agree with her.
I’m glad you liked the captures Ellen. The dresses were beautiful; I liked the gold one best. Zoë preferred the form-fitting red and Inara wanted the lace one. Which was your choice?
The Captain has hired a new mechanic. With the last men in mind and perhaps thinking of Kaylee, he gave the job to a woman this time. She’s nothing like Kaylee Ellen; not at all. I’m nervous of her for no good reason and am currently avoiding her.
Fifi is her usually healthy Beagle self and I am well too. I hope you and Mattie are well?
Love River
Dear River, Sometimes folks dont take or give praise too well. Despite their experience none of those three are good at expressing themselves but understand each other pretty well I think. I liked the silver dress and Kaylee the rose one but they were all beautiful. Your friend is doing good on her crutches and to celebrate we went to town the other day I did enjoy it. The drawings you sent were wonderful girl when you visit again could you do one of Mattie? Then I would have both my boys always. Love Ellen
Dear Ellen,
Tonia, the mechanic, is gone. She was stealing parts from Serenity! How dare she? I’m thankful Kaylee’s not here right now. She would be so angry and sad.
I’m hoping Kaylee told you what else that woman did, because I can’t talk about it yet with much coherence. Inara is helping me understand things better there, she is a true friend.
We have a new job Ellen, one that pays well and makes everyone happy. We are transporting lumber to a new settlement of ex-Independents. I find them very interesting people and am fascinated by their stories and their bravery in starting this new life.
Simon is improving again slowly, thank goodness, and I’ve spoken to him about his letters to Kaylee. Since I couldn’t approach this directly, he would be mortified I knew about his personal correspondence, I was manipulative and devious. Please tell me it worked?
Our new friends have hired us to do another job. We are transporting fish for them and I find these creatures fascinating.
The swimming to and fro, the peaceful purpose ness of their existence interests and intrigues me. Don’t tell anyone Ellen, but twice now I have gone swimming in the tanks. I wanted to study the environment from within and that seemed the best way to do it. Do you think me strange? I hope not.
Thank you for your comment about my drawing. I am regaining my love for the art every day and have drawn some pictures of the fish for you. I’ve also included another drawing. It’s done from memory and if you like it, I can improve on it when I see you again.
Love River
River dear girl, I love the special drawing. I dont know how you could improve it. I put it over my bed and its gonna stay there for ever. The fish drawings were good too and youre right they do look peaceful. I think swimming with them sounds a fine way to study them why would it be strange? Kaylee is brighter since your brothers last letter so whatever you did worked. Youre a good kind girl and talented too. Love Ellen
