Serenity was silent and calm as the Shepherd made his way to the kitchen. After a considerable time in the black they were currently docked on an Independent friendly moon and most of the crew had left the ship.

River had decided, not before time, that she needed new clothes. Simon had gone along to assist, or more probably, impede her. Inara had a contract, much to the Captain’s hardly concealed displeasure and the others were all involved with the inevitable crime. The only people on the ship at present were he and Kaylee.

Book poured himself a cup of tea and sank onto the couch with a sigh. He was looking forward to this quiet period, at times he positively missed the Abbey and its ordered ways.

“Shepherd,” Kaylee’s voice quavered over the ship’s comm. “My water’s broke.”

****************

Book gently deposited his burden onto the bed in the sick bay. Before bringing Kaylee here he’d tried to contact both the doctor and the Captain. Neither had replied. The doctor was probably out of range and The Captain would be maintaining communication silence. He really had no idea what to do next.

In former times he’d been much involved with destruction and death, but he’d never brought life. At the abbey that was another Shepherd’s domain. The closest he’d ever come to the experience was at the Heart of Gold, and then Petaline had been whisked away by the young doctor. He’d only seen the baby after the event.

Book looked doubtfully at Kaylee panting on the table and felt an unaccustomed fear. He was fond of, if he were honest, loved Kaylee; loved all the crew, difficult as they so often were. Though he’d come to identify with all those on board, he had a special place in his heart for the girl.

The first to welcome him onto the ship, at all times accepting of him, the little mechanic was to him the epitome of tolerance and forbearance. While the others on the crew at times questioned his past, she never had. Kaylee contentedly took him at face value and treating him accordingly.

Even now while he should be reassuring Kaylee, she was typically busy comforting him. “I’ll be alright Shepherd, just need someone to hold my hand right now.”

“I can do that child,” he promptly took hold of her small hand, smoothing her hair with the other as she gasped in pain. “But have no notion what to do next.”

“Simon’s got lots of books,” Kaylee smiled at him mischievously. “Jayne buys him more every time we hit planetside.”

The Shepherd chuckled with her at the picture she presented. He could imagine the Doctor’s reaction to the books Jayne bought, his attempts to be diplomatic without irritating the big mercenary.

Jayne had, in his way, been taking very good care of Kaylee and the coming baby. Watching the man trying not to fuss over them was both an amusing and reassuring sight.

“Here it comes again.” Kaylee warned.

Book sighed and tightening his grip on her hand, prayed that everything would go smoothly.

****************

Book stood quietly in the doorway watching the scene before him.

The baby was beautiful, just like her Mama the Shepherd reflected, and a miracle too. He understood now why people spoke of the miracle of birth. Watching life arrive into the world was a most spiritual experience.

The child had arrived with a cry and a gurgle, only moments before the rest of the crew returned. While all had been disposed to stand around and discuss the new addition and the suddenness of her arrival, he had hunted all but Jayne from the room.

The two had spent the last while just staring at the child and talking.

“Shepherd, we been talkin’.” Kaylee’s voice interrupted his reverie.

“Yes,” he encouraged.

“We was wonderin’ if ya wanted to name the baby?”

“You want me to name the child?”

Of course he like everyone else on board Serenity was aware of the pair’s arguments over naming their child. Jayne, not surprisingly, had issues with names and Kaylee had too many choices, some of them extremely outlandish. Nevertheless he was surprised and touched at their request.

“Yes,” Kaylee nodded determinedly. “Ya were here, held my hand, saw her first, we figure yer entitled.”

Book watched his friends gazing at the baby and couldn’t imagine these two ever ending up dirtside for long.

“Lani,” he suggested. “An old name from Earth-that-was, it means sky.” He thought it appropriate for a child who would more than likely spend her youthful years flying through the black.

“Lani,” Kaylee repeated with glee.

“Pretty name,” Jayne agreed. “Reckon ya could bless her for us too?”

“I would be honoured.” Book placed his hand on the fuzzy head, “Bless those whose hearts are pure for they shall see god.”
